Industrial Design

  1. What is the logic behind the HP Elite x2 industrial design?

The HP Elite x2 design team chose a minimalistic and timeless aesthetic utilizing a high strength precision cut aluminum chassis, Gorilla glass covers and a simple, elegant kickstand with jewel hinge caps to represent power, performance, and status. At a very thin 8mm, the product delivers a strong, sealed, and fan-less architecture that sets a new standard in the category. A carefully crafted kickstand easily articulates to the perfect position for optimal usability while closing flush to complete the form. The perfectly paired detachable keyboard delivers a best in class typing experience using a stiffened aluminum deck and keys uniquely designed for ideal contouring, separation, and size. The addition of patterned microfiber material nicely contrasts the smooth aluminum for a feel of comfort and a tailored appeal. Every detail was thoughtfully designed to deliver an outstanding overall product experience.

  1. Why is there a “black line” on the back of the HP Elite x2 1012?

Extending the camera glass simplifies the overall product look while enhancing antenna performance. The black Gorilla Glass brings the clean, honest look of the front glass to the back while capturing the antenna area in a radio wave friendly material. This design solution can be found on other HP commercial and consumer products.

  1. The HP logo is covered when keyboard is raised – is there concern that it may look like B&O product because that is the only brand seen?

The B&O logo is toned down with a darker finish and is placed in a sub-brand location similar to all other products that support this sub brand. The HP logo is proudly displayed on the back of the products along with the model name “Elite x2” and the specific product name is etched on each unit. The model name and product name etching can be found on both keyboards as well.

Competition

  1. How do I compete against Microsoft Surface (Pro/Book)?

HP Elite x2 1012 is uniquely crafted for business needs:

  • Enterprise Security – Only HP Elite x2 1012 includes HP SureStart with Dynamic

Protection enables BIOS level security with automatic detection and self-healing. Microsoft Surface does not include this which means that the customer will need to identify an alternative security solution to ensure their data/device is 100% protected.

  1. How do I compete against Apple Ipad Pro?

HP Elite x2 1012 is uniquely crafted for business needs:

Apple is aggressively making strides, specifically targeting executives. Apple will position their iPad Pro as “executive bling” that is designed for work-to-home productivity. They’ll focus on split screen view, Apple ecosystem (e.g., Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard), and Apple Pay, to name a few. HP must combat this by advising their customers that iPad Pro is still tied to iOS, which means that Apple iPad Pro is lacking:

  • Enterprise Security – Only HP Elite x2 1012 includes HP SureStart with Dynamic Protection enables BIOS level security with automatic detection and self-healing. Apple iPad Pro does not which means that the customer will need to identify an alternative security solution to ensure their data/device is 100% protected.

  • Enterprise Manageability – Only HP Elite x2 1012 includes both HP Touchpoint Manager PLUS Intel vPro. Collectively, these solutions allow for quick ‘plug-n-play’ into client’s environment, and simplified deployment & management across the entire organization

  • Durability – whereas HP Elite x2 1012 has survived 115,000 hours of reliability testing

  • Global Serviceability – Apple iPad Pro doesn’t have commercial support. Its likely clients will need to bring their iPad Pro into the Apple store (which is time consuming) versus having HP onsite support, 24/7, same day/NBD, self-maintainer, DMR, and dedicated resources.

The core difference with HP SureStart with Dynamic Protection the BIOS level protection with automatic detection & self-healing. Dell DDP | E does not have this.

  • Expand upon HP’s manageability solution of HP Touchpoint Manager PLUS Intel vPro.

Collectively, HP’s solution enables customers to deploy across the entire organization in a matter of minutes vs. hours with Dell KACE.

  1. The competition seems to be considering screens larger than 12”, even 14”. Will HP offer 14” tablet?

We cannot comment on unannounced products. However, HP continues to monitor the market and the customer needs for all future products. Based on past investigations, use cases change significantly as the screen size increases. The HP Elite x2 1012 is designed to meet the needs of executive and mobile professionals.

  1. Why can’t a customer remove the keyboard and attach it backward to the tablet, like SP3/SP4?

The keyboard attachment connection force was optimized for best typing experience and not designed to be attached backwards. Utilizing a strong magnetic hold between keyboard and tablet creates a more rigid confident feel when typing. This also prevents damage or wear to connectors and product surfaces increasing overall longevity.

  1. What kind of batteries are needed in the pen?

Two types of batteries are needed for HP Active Pen with Bluetooth App Launch. The AAAA battery is needed to power the WACOM AES functions for the writing tip and the barrel buttons. The battery is replaced by twisting the Bluetooth cap feature from the main barrel of the pen. In addition, two SR527SW type coin batteries are needed to power the Bluetooth app launch button. The coin batteries are replaced by using a screwdriver to remove the internal end of the Bluetooth cap feature.

  1. Where can I get replacement AAAA batteries?

AAAA batteries are available from Duracell. They are easily found on Amazon, or in many local retail locations.

  1. If someone wants to replace the Wacom AES pen with a premium Wacom pen, is it supported?

No. There is no other Wacom pen compatible with the HP Elite x2 1012. Wacom offers different EMR or passive pens that are not compatible with AES teachnology.

  1. How can the pen be attached to the tablet?

HP Elite x2 1012 provides different options for the user to attach the pen to the tablet:

  • Tether: The tablet has a provision for a pen tether in the bottom left corner. The tether loop is provided with the Pen.

  • Pen Loop: The HP Travel Keyboard and the HP Advanced Keyboard include a pen loop that the user can attach to the slate.

  • Tether and Keyboard magnets: While using the HP Travel Keyboard or the HP Advanced Keyboard, the user has the option to use the top keyboard magnets to attach the pen to the keyboard cover always securing it with the tether. Please use the tether to prevent loss, especially when placing it in a briefcase.

  1. Wll the Keyboard Pen holder lose it stickiness easily. Can we make a permanent holder on the keyboard and include the sticky cloth as an addition?

After many iterations of holders (fixed on the unit, adapter in the lock slot on the unit and fix loop on the keyboard), it was decided that the tab holder pen loop was best option because it gives the user the flexibility to use or not, place it where they want it and if needed, be replaced. Production quality adhesive will be optimized. Please try to just place the loop once, and not move it, to ensure the best adhesive solution.

  1. Does HP Elite x2 1012 have plans to support legacy HP docking solutions such as the ElitePad docking or the HP Pro Tablet wired stand docking station where the device can be docked and kept in a standing position?

Unfortunately, this is not supported on the HP Elite x2 1012. Moving forward HP commercial mobility will offer Thunderbolt, USB-C, and wireless docks that provide longer lifecycles and broader platform compatibility essential for enterprise customers.

  1. Is still possible to develop mated docking system like SP3?

The feedback we have on SP3 docking is that it is not a great docking experience. It requires hard alignment, has limited I/O and a new dock is needed generation over generation. The dock can only be used with a limited number of products which also limits availability in the worldwide channel offering. With the USB –C Thunderbolt dock, the Elite x2 1012 can support a single connection to power, more I/O, dual 4k monitors, and a superfast connection. The Elite USB-C Docking Station will also function with platforms that have USB-C without Thunderbolt.

  1. HP Elite x2 1012 has several docking solutions. How many monitors can HP Elite x2 1012 support for each and at what resolution?

Both the HP Elite USB-C Docking Station and the HP Advanced Wireless Dock support two simultaneous external 2K displays. The HP Elite 65W Thunderbolt 3 Dock also supports two simultaneous 4K resolution displays.

  1. Does the HP Elite x2 1012 work with non-HP WiGig docks?

This will vary by depending on the dock vendor. Some vendors lock their docks to a single brand of platforms.

  1. Can you explain the different flavors of USB-C (thunderbolt, data transfer speed, video capability, etc)? Is USB-C with thunderbolt superior?

USB-C as a form factor is a reversible plug and easier to use than USB-A, USB A/B. The HP Elite x2 1012 USB-C port supports USB 3.1. With USB 3.1, Superspeed+ can be configured with additional component support to support up to 10Gb/s data signaling rate. At this speed, the higher bandwidth needs of two 4K monitors are supported as well as that of several peripherals. USB-C is backward compatible with USB 3.0 and 2.0 devices. Previously, USB 3.0 was the maximum data transfer rate of 5Gb/s. Thunderbolt transfer rate is 40Gb/s transfer rate and this provides supports dual 4K monitors.

The Superspeed+ requires different cables and components to support.

  1. Is the Type C / thunderbolt docking station compatible with different tablets or notebooks other than HP?

The Elite USB-C Docking Station is compatible with Windows platforms supporting USB-C with USB 3.0 functionality. If the USB-C port supports power delivery the platform can also be charged from the Elite USB-C Docking Station – depending on the docking stations configuration, up to ~ 45W of power will be passed to the platform.
