Fellowship Designation and Supervision Policy


  1. PURPOSE:

To provide designation guidance and supervision requirements for post-residency training programs




  1. SCOPE:

This policy is directed to all post-residency training programs




  1. POLICY:




    1. All post-residency training programs (fellowships) must be approved by the AH GMEC prior to initiation.




      1. Fellowship directors must complete a Fellowship Application for submission to the AH GMEC

      2. The AH GMEC shall determine the type of Fellowship based upon the criteria listed below




    1. The Division of Academic Affairs designates two general categories of fellowship:




      1. Fellowship – Type I:




        1. Fellowships that are ACGME-accredited




        1. Fellowship that are non-ACGME-accredited but meet the following requirements:




          1. The Fellowship abides by all of policies established for residency/fellowship training at AH and which are referenced in each Hospital Housestaff Manual.




          1. The Fellowship meets all ACGME Common Program Requirements.




          1. Fellows are supervised at all times.




          1. The Fellowship submits goals and objectives and a curriculum to the GMEC.

NB: The AH GMEC reserves the right to choose not to sponsor a non-accredited fellowship if the program does not demonstrate a scholarly curriculum, adequate faculty, adequate supervision, adequate clinical experience, or for any other academic deficiency.




        1. Fellows may not moonlight in the specialty in which they are training but may moonlight in the specialty in which they have completed a residency program, subject to approval by the Medical Director, Division of Academic Affairs.




        1. Contracts for a Fellow – Type I will be initiated by the Division of Academic Affairs.




        1. All Type I fellowship directors must sit on the Atlantic Health Graduate Medical Education Committee.




        1. Fellows shall receive the same benefits as other AH residents and shall be covered by AH malpractice insurance.




      1. Fellowship – Type II




        1. Fellowships that do not meet the requirements for Type I programs, as listed above.




        1. All aspects of credentialing will be undertaken by the Medical Staff Office of the appropriate hospital following their standard procedure for new members.




        1. Contracts for a Fellow – Type II will be initiated by a member, Section or Department of the Medical Staff.




    1. All fellowship programs will complete a Fellowship Application (see attached)




    1. All fellows will receive a certificate of completion issued by the Division of Academic Affair, Atlantic Health




    1. It is the responsibility of the AH GMEC to maintain a complete inventory of all Fellowship Programs conducted at AH hospitals.
