Eight Great American Tales

  • Story 1: “Fine furs for a lady”



  • Kid Brady was part of a criminal gang, but when he felt in love with Molly, he decided to leave it. The gang took money of the good people from the west of New York.

  • The others members of the gang felt sorry when they knew that Brady was leaving it. But they didn´t try to stop him because for criminals like them, it was wrong to do what your girlfriend want.

  • Brady started working as a plumber. That was what he studied when he was younger.

  • Brady gives Molly a Russian fur. Molly gets sad because she knows that he didn´t buy it, because he only gets $75 a month.

  • Molly put on the furs, and they go for a walk. It was a big news, because people who lived on that side of the city, was generally very poor.

  • Detective Ransom is walking down the street, and he goes to speak with Brady. He asks if Brady was at a woman´s house, and the answer is yes. So, the Detective says that a thousand dollar fur left the house the same time he did, and it was similarly to what Molly was wearing.

  • Brady tells that he bought the furs, and they decide to go to the shop that he said that have bought. Although, when they are doing this, Brady says that he had really stolen the furs, and Molly starts crying.

  • A policeman comes around the corner, and says that the furs that Molly was wearing was Alaskan, and cost about twenty dollars. Brady hits him in the face, because he doesn´t want Molly to know how much they cost. Ransom put handcuffs on Brady.

  • Molly says that she doesn´t want anything expensive, she just wants Brady.

  • The policeman tells that the woman found her furs at the back of her wardrobe.



  • Story 2: “Springtime on the menu”



  • Sarah worked typing things for people.

  • Every day, she typed menus from a restaurant near her home, and she was paid with food.

  • It was a springtime afternoon and Sarah was sad because was remembering her holiday at the country last summer. She felt in love with Walter.

  • He made a crown of dandelion for her, and put into her head.

  • She was waiting for a letter from Walter, and it didn´t come. He had said that´d marry her in the spring.

  • Walter finds her. He went to her old house, but people said that she wasn´t living there anymore. Then he went to the restaurant next door her house for dinner, and when he saw the menu, he saw dandelions and a W typed from a strange way, that he knew it was from her typewriter. He called the man that was the proprietor from the restaurant and asked where she lived.

  • There was a tear on the top of the menu and Sarah had written: “Dearest Walter, with an egg on top”



  • Story 3: “The last leaf”



  • Sue and Joanna lived together on the top floor of a house. They met each other on a Italian Restaurant and were both artists.

  • Joanna was ill, with pneumonia. She said that when the last leaf from a plant that was on the wall of the next house went, she´d die.

  • Sue tells everything about Joanna to Mr. Berman, a painter who lived in the same house downstairs. He feels sorry for her.

  • The plant doesn´t die, it stays there with just a last leaf. Joanna sees that she has been a bad girl.

  • The Doctor goes and says that Joanna is out of danger, but Mr. Berman is dying of pneumonia.

  • Mr. Berman dies because one cold, terrible, wet night, he climbed the wall next to Joanna´s Room and painted a leaf, when the last one died.



  • Story 4: “The things we do for love”



  • Joe painted beautifully, and Delia played music very well. The met one day, felt in love and got married.

  • Joe studied painting, and Delia, music. There wasn´t money enough at their room, and so, Delia decided to give music lessons and Joe, to sell some of his pictures.

  • Delia got excited because she found a student. But she soon thought that her student, Clementina, was terrible.

  • One night, Delia´s hand had some white cloth around it and she looked very worried. She told Joe a strange story about a cheese sandwich and Clementina.

  • Delia told the really story to Joe: she was working at a laundry, a girl put a hot iron on her hand.

  • Joe was working at same laundry, in the engine room, and he had to send some oil and cloth to a girl that had burned her hand.

  • They lied to because they didn´t want to let each other sad to see that they weren´t working with what they always wanted and studied to.



  • Story 5: “Ikey Scoenstein´s love-potion”



  • Ikey Schoestein worked at a drugstore where medicines were made by hand at night.

  • McGowan and Ikey Schoestein lived at a house where Mrs. Riddle was the landlady and were both in love by the same girl, Rosie, Mrs. Riddle´s daughter.

  • McGowan goes to the drugstore and tells Ikey that he is going to run away with Rosie, in order to get married with her. He tells that he needs a potion to give Rosie on the dinner for her to fell in love for him, especially because her dad doesn´t like him.

  • Ikey made a sleeping potion, and gave McGowan.

  • Ikey told Mr. Riddle about McGowan´s plan.

  • McGowan and Ikey met on the street, and Gowan tells that Rosie and him are now man and wife. He didn´t felt well about putting the potion on Rosie´s drink, so he put on her father´s coffe, who had been really hard.



  • Story 6: “ The Count and the wedding guest”



  • Andy Donovan lived in a boarding house, where Miss Conway goes to.

  • She wore boring clothes, and, one day, when she is getting out from the hotel, she sees Andy. They start talking, and Miss Conway tells him that she feels so lonely at New York, and that she received a letter saying that her fiancé, had just died.

  • She showed a picture from him, that she had on a locket, to Andy.

  • Andy and Miss Conway decided to get married.

  • Miss Conway tells Andy that the story about her fiancé was false, and she wore black just because she thought she looked beautifully. Andy answered that he had already known that this wasn´t true because the photographs that she showed were of a friend of him.



  • Story 7: “Thinking yourself rich”



  • Jeff Peter was a man that when working as doctor, went as Doctor Waugh-Hoo, the famous Indian medicine man.

  • He was selling potions one day at the street when a policeman stopped him. He needed a licence to do that.

  • “Doctor Waugh-Hoo” was sitting at a chair on the hotel next day when Andy Tucker, a great salesman that he knew, came and sat next to him. “Doctor Waugh-Hoo” wanted Andy to be his partner.

  • Another man came next day and called “Doctor Waugh-Hoo” to help The Mayor, because he was terrible ill. He goes and tells that the Mayor is suffering of pneumonia. Second the doctor, the only chance for the mayor to survive is “thinking himself again”, with the help of “Waugh-Hoo”.

  • The Mayor gives the doctor a paper for him to sign. After that, the mayor´s “nephew”, Mr. Biddle, a detective, arrest the doctor. He and the Mayor had made a plan to catch “Doctor Waugh-Hoo”.

  • The Detective said that he´d the doctor to the sheriff, but when they arrived out of the street, Biddle takes the handcuffs out. Biddle was really Andy Tucker, Jeff Petter´s old friend.



  • Story 8: “Lost and found”



  • Mrs. Maro had a house and a store where she sold stationery, where her daughter, Helen, had married Frank. But, Frank´s best friend, was also in love with Helen.

  • After the weeding, Helen went downstairs to put her hat, because she and Frank were leaving for their honeymoon. Jonh jumped into the room, told that he loves her and kissed her hand.

  • Just then, Frank gets into the room and threw her to the floor.

  • Mrs. Maro died and because business weren´t going well on the store, Helen decided to take paying guests upstairs.

  • She received two guests. One is a famous violin player, that is called Ramonti because his manager gave him this name. One day, he tells Helen that she loves her, and wants to marry him. He didn´t remember anything about the past, but he knew that she was the only woman for him.

  • The other is a man that Helen knows that belongs from her past in same way. He was John.

  • Helen got confused, because two men said they loved her in the same time, but she decided to stay with the one that she had got married and who had forgotten everything, Frank.
