WAAHP Call to action- Reduction in MCAT Testing Locations!

As the MCAT opens registration for 2018 using a new vendor, I am reaching out to you asking for your advocacy for equitable access to testing locations that don’t disproportionately impact rural and underserved students.

The bottom line… a new provider has been chosen to deliver the MCAT. Thus, we only have ONE testing center for the entire state of Hawaiʻi now! Many of our students are losing reasonable access and will be adversely impacted.

Here’s how you can help!

Voice your concerns by emailing mcat@aamc.org and by completing the surveys on the MCAT registration and testing site. See below for a sample letter to help you get started!

Sample Student Letter to send to mcat@aamc.org
Subject:  MCAT seats needed- Disproportionate impact on rural MCAT test takers

Dear MCAT team,

It has come to my attention that you have changed vendors for the MCAT administration this year.  Based on the reduced sites in my area, I will now have to travel farther (indicate distance) spend more money, and miss more school to take the test.  The choice of limiting the testing sites this year puts me at a significant disadvantage compared to my peers who live in areas that are well served by the new company.  This serves as another hurdle for those of us with limited resources to pursue a career in medicine.  I encourage you to restore the university testing sites as soon as possible.

Thank you for your consideration,

Minority Health and Health Disparities International Research Training Program

The NIH funded program will engage 9 undergraduates and 1 graduate student annually in international research projects in tropical medicine, infectious diseases and related health sciences. The Program takes place throughout one academic year. In the summer, students will participate in an 8 day “Introduction to Biomedical Research Workshop” at UH Manoa, and then spend ~9 weeks conducting mentored research in either Bangkok, Thailand, or Yaounde, Cameroon (Central Africa). After returning, students will attend a post-workshop session where they will discuss their summer research experiences in a group setting, work with biostatisticans on data analysis, discuss research results with faculty mentors, and begin preparing written reports. Each participating student will receive $1,000/month for 3 months for participating in the summer program.

If you are interested in applying to the program, please contact Dr. Sandra Chang, Dr. Vivek R. Nerurkar, or Dr. Diane W. Taylor at MHIRT-L@lists.hawaii.edu for more information. Applications are due on December 1st, 2017

IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence - INBRE III

Looking for a paid summer research opportunity? INBRE applications for summer semester are open. Open to college and university students from most Hawaii schools (see participating schools here). Students do a semester of research under the supervision of a research lab supervisor. They also write a short paper summarizing their research and make a poster which they present at the Biomedical Symposium at JABSOM in April. Students receive $1000 upon completion of the program. To apply, students must find a lab supervisor first. They must email researchers on this list (attach their resume and cover letter) and ask the researcher if they could be the student’s lab supervisor. Lab supervisors also receive $1000 to cover lab supply costs.

Email phcc@hawaii.edu for assistance with the application process.  For more information, visit their website by clicking here. Spring ’18 applications will be available in late December.
MyNRMN: Mentor/Mentee Networking and Collaboration Platform

MyNRMN is a powerful social networking platform for students and researchers across the biomedical, behavioral, social, and clinical sciences to connect with one another for anything from general questions about research and professional development as a scientist to scheduling more formal mentorship appointments one-on-one or as a group.

JABSOM Problem-Based Learning Demonstration

Are you planning to apply to JABSOM? It is strongly recommended that you attend this demo (Note: this is different from PBL demos held by MSMP or PHCC). An orientation to the JABSOM curriculum will be held which includes an explanation of PBL and the opportunity to take part in a PBL exercise. A description of the educational program and a tour of the Medical Education Building will also be provided. Date offered: December 8, 2017 Friday – Register by December 1 to register, please email: Ms. Kori-Jo Kochi at kjkochi@hawaii.edu with your name, address, name of school (that you’re currently attending), contact number and which date you plan to attend (December 8, 2017). There is a possibility you could be placed on a waitlist.

Atlantis Project Pre-Med Fellowship Abroad

Pre-med? Apply today for our intensive summer shadowing program in European or South American hospitals.

Shadow doctors. Medicine is a vocation. In order to more fully understand that vocation before committing to medical school, pre-med students should be exposed to the practice of medicine as often as possible. By participating in an Atlantis Fellowship, students spend roughly 100 hours shadowing doctors in multiple specialties in hospitals abroad. This high level of medical exposure affords students the opportunity to view medicine in action and guides them in their decision to continue to pursue medicine as a vocation.

Stand out on your application. Medical schools naturally prefer to accept students who have demonstrated a devotion to the medical field as well as an understanding of what life as a physician entails. One of the best ways that students can demonstrate this devotion and understanding is to shadow doctors. In addition to providing the shadowing experience that proves a commitment to the profession, the Atlantis Fellowship helps students improve their med school applications through extra opportunities such as volunteering, medical humanities research, and MCAT and AMCAS prep.

Learn abroad. Atlantis Fellows live and learn in new locations, growing in their understanding of other cultures. Through experiencing the differences between U.S. and international healthcare, Fellows distinguish the areas of overlap in these healthcare systems, clarifying the essential elements of medicine and the physician’s role. Finally, as most Atlantis Fellowship programs are hosted at government-run hospitals, students see firsthand the pros and cons of government-run

Healthcare and are prepared to participate effectively in the debate surrounding the role of government in U.S. healthcare.

Shadow over break. Atlantis Fellowships run during winter and summer university breaks so that Fellows do not miss important pre-requisite classes that are a part of their major.
