Gene Windham was born in Pembroke, Georgia and moved to Laurens County Georgia when he was six months old. He grew up on the farm in a rural farming community where families worked together and neighbor helped neighbor. It was there that the concept of service to others became a part of his makeup.

After graduating from Dublin High School, Gene joined the US Navy, became an electronic technician and volunteered for service on submarines. After completing his four year enlistment in the Navy, he went to Middle Georgia College and the University of Georgia (UGA) and received a Bachelors of Business Administration in Economics from the University of Georgia. After some work experience he returned to UGA and earned a Masters of Business Administration with honors.

Gene spent 28 years as a Banker, serving in positions from Loan Officer to Regional Executive Vice President where he was responsible for 50 branches and five hundred employees. After retiring from banking, he and a partner operated a Management Consulting Practice, helping entrepreneurs take their businesses to higher levels of performance and helping problem businesses get back on track. He and partners also operated a successful small scale venture capital business. After tiring of spending so much time on airplanes, Gene joined his wife, Denise, in her financial planning practice and started devoting more of his time to Rotary.

He was selected for and is a graduate of Leadership Atlanta and Leadership Florida.

Having always had an interest in serving others and his community, he has served a number of organizations as a volunteer and in leadership rolls. Some of the organizations and positions are as follows: United Way of Atlanta – Allocations Committee Member, Norcross Elementary PTA- President, Atlanta Chamber of Commerce – Economic Development Committee Member, Georgia Coastal United Way – Director, Savannah Chamber of Commerce – Economic Development Committee Member, Rape Crisis Center of Savannah – Board member, Tampa Bay Chapter of American Red Cross – Director and Chapter Chair, Pinellas United Way – Board & Campaign Chair, St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce - Board, Pinellas Economic Development Council – Board Member, and Tampa Bay Partnership Board and Chair.

Gene has been active in his church, serving on numerous committees and various positions including Congregational President.

His Rotary career began in 1986 when he was invited to join the Savannah Georgia South Rotary Club. Since that time he has been a member of the St. Petersburg Florida Rotary Club and the Union County Georgia Rotary Club (his current home club). Since joining Rotary Gene has maintained a perfect attendance record. He has served in various positions at the club and district level including; member of the planning committee for the RI President Herb Brown home district Celebration, Club Classification Chair, Club Membership Development Committee member, Club Vice President, Club President, Club Bylaws Committee member, District Membership Committee member, Assistant Governor, District Membership Chair, District Disaster Relief Chair, District Services Director, and Georgia Multi-District PETS planning committee. Gene has served a Georgia Multi-District PETS discussion leader, Co- Discussion Leader at the “Catch the Wave” Conference and has presented to several Rotary Clubs on Membership and Foundation.

Gene is a member of the Paul Harris Society and is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow. Gene’s wife Denise is also a Rotarian, a Past Club President and multiple Paul Harris Fellow.

They have a daughter, granddaughter and grand son that they don’t get to see nearly often enough.

Gene and Denise have hiked the Appalachian Trail through Georgia. They breed and show Kuvasz dogs. They have had dogs invited and shown at the Eukanuba National Invitational Championship and the Westminster Show at Madison Square Garden. They have horses, llamas and chickens on their mini farm in the mountains of Northeast Georgia. Their hobbies are their critters, and enjoying the beautiful mountains of North Georgia. Gene enjoys horseback riding in the National forest near his home and Skiing in the Rocky Mountains.
