I: Text. 3 vols. in 1, continuously paginated. (2), 769, (1)pp. Prof. illus. (engraved figs., integrated with text). II-IV: Plates. 5, 2, 6pp., engraved half-title by Ollivier and Reveil, engraved frontis. portrait by Massart, double-page map, and 354 fine line-engraved plates. Letterpress text and plates both well printed on fine paper. Text: Stout 4to. Early twentieth-century buckram. Plates: Large folio. Contemporary marbled boards, 3/4 calf gilt. Plate vols. II-III uncut. A mixed set, which includes the fine first editions of the first two plate volumes, together with an (undated) 1866 Brussels edition of the text. First published Paris 1840-1857, this great and immensely influential work by the noted student of Percier and Fontaine was called by Hitchcock “the bible of the Renaissance revival in France as of several generations of academic architects throughout the rest of the world.” Four plates in the final series supplied from another nineteenth-century edition, slightly smaller in format. Covers battered and detached, but sewing sound; final plate (and flyleaf) torn and crudely repaired; in other respects, a largely clean and fresh copy, with only a little intermittent foxing.
