[Section III B: Normalisation et Construction. Vol. 4.]) 239, (1)pp. 100 illus. Lrg. sq. 8vo. Plain wraps. Dec. d.j., designed by Le Corbusier, printed in red, yellow and black (small loss at head of spine; a few additional very small tears). First edition. “After World War II Le Corbusier’s writings became more personal.... The most ambitious post-war books were ‘Le Modulor’ (1950) and its sequel ‘Le Modulor 2, 1955.’ They resulted from a research project begun at ASCORAL in 1943 and aimed at discovering some universal laws of harmonic proportion. The Modulor turned into a set scale of dimension (in fact, two, a red and a blue scale), using the Fibonacci series (a whole number proportional series approximating to the golden section), intended to ensure that all dimensions in a project related to human proportions” (Tim Benton, in the Dictionary of Art). Boldly signed by Le Corbusier across the half-title, in brown ink.

601 LE CORBUSIER-SAUGNIER. Vers une architecture. Sixième édition. xi, (1), 230, (2)pp. Prof. illus. Sm. 4to. Orig. dec. wraps. The designation “Sixième édition” at the base of the front cover refers in this case simply to a sixth (or fictive) printing of the first edition. Early issues such as this--which continues to use “Le Corbusier-Saugnier” as the author’s name--bear edition statements only on the front cover, and not in the text itself. A new edition proper was published in 1924, with revisions, under the name “Le Corbusier.” Wrappers torn and taped at spine, and mostly loose; stitching sound. This copy is accompanied by a trimmed but neat copy of the front cover of the 9th edition, showing the change of authorship to “Le Corbusier,” and with the statement “Nouvelle édition revue et augmentée.”
