1. Govt. launch Jan Dhan scheme to promote financial inclusion: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched 'Pradhan

Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana' to help the poor open bank accounts which will come with the facility of a debit card and an



insurance cover of Rs 1 lakh.

Note: i. The main features of the scheme include Rs 5,000 overdraft facility for Aadhar-linked accounts, Ru Pay

Debit Card with inbuilt Rs 1 lakh accident insurance cover and minimum monthly remuneration of Rs 5,000 to business

correspondents who will provide the last link between the account holders and the bank.

2. Bangladesh to join BRICS Bank: Bangladesh has decided to join the newly formed BRICS Bank, an initiative of the world's

five emerging economies - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

4. ICICI Bank offers EMI on debit cards: ICICI Bank, the country’s largest private sector bank, has launched EMI (equated

Card’, which enables students going abroad for higher studies to take care of their expenses.

Note: ICICI Bank Student Travel Card is available in the dollar, pound, euro, Australian dollar and Canadian dollar. It is

valid for three years and can be applied for from any foreign exchange-enabled ICICI Bank branch. Anyone, including noncustomers,

can apply for this card.



10. India Ratings & Research revised its FY15 gross domestic product (GDP) growth forecast to 5.7 per cent from its April

2014 forecast of 5.6 per cent.



11. The Supreme Court (SC) ruled that a complaint about a bounced cheque must only be filed at the place where the bank

dishonoured it, settling doubts raised by its own earlier conflicting judgments on the jurisdiction of a magistrate.



12. Asian Development Bank (ADB) has upgraded India's economic growth forecast to 6.3 per cent in 2015-16

15. World Bank to give $153 mn loan for Odisha project: India has inked a loan agreement with World Bank for assistance

of $153 million (about Rs 920 crore) for the Odisha Disaster Recovery Project.



16. A panel headed by former Economic Advisor to Prime Minister, C Rangarajan sets poverty line at Rupees 32 per day in

rural areas and Rupees 47 in Urban areas.

He also said that the number of poor in India was much higher in 2011-12 at 29.5 per cent of the population, which means

that three out of 10 persons are poor.


The Rangarajan Committee was set up last year to review the Tendulkar Committee methodology for estimating poverty

and clear the ambiguity over the number of poor in the country.



14. Exim Bank has extended USD 46 million line of credit to Mauritius for financing goods and defence related vehicles

purchases.



15. World Bank has signed an agreement with the government to provide a loan assistance of USD 1,006.20 million for Sarva

Shiksha Abhiyan III, which is the largest ongoing "Education for All" programme in the world.

16. FICCI and IDBI signed an MoU for easy access to organised finance facility at competitive interest rates for micro, small

and medium enterprise (MSME).



17. India recently launched its own payment gateway 'RuPay', equivalent of Visa and Mastercard, which will work on ATMs

and merchant outlets and help in reducing cash transactions.



Note: i. RuPay, which works on three channels -- ATMs, Point of Sales (POS) and online sales, is the seventh such payment

gateway in the world.



ii. The RuPay platform -- developed by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI)-- is being used by certain banks like

ICICI, State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, among others, for clearing and settlement.



18. India became third-largest economy in 2011 from 10th in 2005: World Bank.

19. World Bank will provide $500 million loan for water supply and sanitation projects in the rural areas of Assam, Bihar,

Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh.

20. World Bank will provide 50 million dollar assistance to Afghanistan to support the government's efforts to improve

access to credit for micro, small and medium enterprises.

ORIGIN: The Committee to Review the Arrangements for Institutional Credit

for Agriculture and Rural Development (CRAFICARD) set up by Reserve Bank

of India in 1979 recommended formation of “NATIONAL BANK FOR AGRICULTURE AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT (NABARD)”

as a “new organisational device for providing undivided attention, forceful direction and pointed focus to the credit problems

arising out of integrated rural development”.

National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) was established on 12 July

1982 by an Act of the Parliament

MANDATE: NABARD was set up as a Development Bank with a mandate for providing and regulating credit and other facilities

for the promotion and development of agriculture, small scale industries, cottage and village industries, handicrafts and other

rural crafts and other allied economic activities in rural areas with a view to promoting integrated rural development and

securing prosperity of rural areas, and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.



CORPORATE MISSION: Promote sustainable and equitable agriculture and rural prosperity through effective credit support,

related services, institution development and other innovative initiatives.



CAPITAL STRUCTURE: The paid up capital of NABARD is Rs.2,000 crore with Government of India (GoI) holding Rs.1,980

21. Union Cabinet approved the Juvenile Justice Bill, 2014 to amend the

Juvenile Justice Act, 2000



Note: Age of a Juvenile in the JJ Bill, 2014: The bill will treat

minors above the age of 16 as adults, who are accused of heinous

crimes like rape and murder. The JJ Act, 2000 treats any person

below the age of 18 as juvenile.



Note: The Provision for Children in conflict zones and Corporal

punishment in the JJ Bill, 2014: The Bill proposes up to seven

year rigorous imprisonment, 5 lakh rupees fine or both for

militant groups who recruit child soldiers or use children for any

purpose.

Note: If the Bill is passed in Parliament, India will join 40 other

countries where corporal punishment is a penal offence.

22. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a declaration that bans

imports of agricultural products from all countries that have

imposed sanctions on Russia over the crisis in Ukraine. Major

sanctions were made by the US and EU.



23. Lok Sabha passes Securities Laws (Amendment) Bill: A Bill to

enhance the powers of market regulator SEBI to curb the menace of

Ponzi schemes and protect investors from fraudulent diversion of

monies raised from them was passed by Lok Sabha



24. Doordarshan signs pact with German channel: In an effort to

distribute its content to international markets, DD India has signed

an agreement with German public service broadcaster Deutsche

Welle (DW). This agreement will help India’s public broadcaster get

a global footprint with its programmes becoming part of the Free-to-

Air basic pack on a DTH platform.
