Containing that Oil Spill

Purpose:

To clean up as much oil as possible while removing as little water as possible.

Materials:

Compostable bowl for water and oil (1 per group)

Oil (sesame – dark color is good and I LIKE THE SMELL! )

Beaker with 200ml of water

Felt cutouts (represent animals)

Dish soap

Material to help clean-up the oil:

  • Cotton balls

  • Cotton pads (rounds)

  • Cotton swabs

  • Newspaper

  • Spoons

  • Stirring straws

  • String

  • OTHER

Procedure:

Note: Not all items need to be used to “clean-up” the oil, modify as needed.

  1. Obtain the materials.

  2. Develop an organized data table depicting the material used and its effectiveness in cleaning up the oil. For example:

Material

Effectiveness

Cotton balls

Worked really well at soaking up oil, but also soaked up a lot of water

Newspaper

  1. Pour 200ml of water into the bowl.

  2. Pour the oil into the center.

    1. Pour about 2 quarters (coins) size amount.

    2. Write down your observation to what happens to the oil in the water.

    3. Place your animals in the center of the oil

  3. Using the straw, blow the oil around the tray.

    1. What does this represent in real life situation? (answer to the right)

  4. Try to remove the oil from the water and animals using the materials provided for you

  5. Measure the amount of water left in the bowl after the clean up.

  6. Clean-up the mess: dump the water on the grass (impervious surface), place paper products in paper bag, put all other materials in the garbage.

1. Data Table:

2. Observations:

3. What does blowing on the oil represent?

4. How much water is remaining after the clean up?

5. Discuss how this is a model for cleaning up oil spills in a water environment.

6. What was most challenging about cleaning up the oil spill?

7. What law(s) would you propose to reduce the chance of future spills?

When the Deepwater Horizon oil rig sank in the Gulf of Mexico on April 22, 2010 no one was prepared for the massive environmental disaster that followed. We now can see how the Gulf oil spill, the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history, stacks up against the world's worst oil spills.

13. The Torrey Canyon Oil Spill

When: March 18, 1967

Where: Scilly Isles, UK

Amount spilled: 25-36 million gallons

The Torrey Canyon was one of the first big supertankers, and it was also the source of one of the first major oil spills. Although the ship was originally built to carry 60,000 tons, it was enlarged to a 120,000-ton capacity, and that’s the amount the ship was carrying when it hit a reef off the coast of Cornwall.

The spill created an oil slick measuring 270 square miles, contaminating 180 miles of coastland. More than 15,000 sea birds and enormous numbers of aquatic animals were killed before the spill was finally contained.

Toxic solvent-based cleaning agents were used by Royal Navy vessels to try to disperse the oil, but that didn't work very well and instead caused a great deal of environmental damage. It was then decided to set fire to the ocean and burn away the oil by dropping bombs.
