On this note, the Action Group (AG) was founded in 1948
by Obafemi Awolowo to defend the interest of the Yoruba. A year later (1949) the Northern peoples Congress (NPC) was formed by Mallam Aminu Kano and Mallam Abubakar Tafawa Balewa to defend the interests of the Northerners. There is no doubt that the establishment of these tribal oriented political organizations turned out to be strong centrifugal forces against Nigerian unity.
