Haemostasis
Blood coagulation factors, their sources and function

Factor

source

function

1

Factor I (Fibrinogen)

Plasma protein made in the liver and usually converted to fibrin

Converted to fibrin

2

Factor II (Prothrombin)

Plasma protein made in the liver with the help of vitamin K

Converted to thrombin

3

Factor III(Tissue factor) or Thromboplastin)

Is released from the damaged tissues

Essential in activating in-vitro coagulation

4

Factor IV (Calcium ions)

Is inorganic iron in plasma derived from diet or bone

Essential for coagulation process

5

Labile factor (Factor V)

Plasma protein made in the liver. Also released from platelets

Co-factor involved in the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin

6

No factor VI

7

Factor VII (Proconvertin) stable factor

Plasma protein made in the liver with the help of vitamin K

Activates factor IX

8

Factor VIII (Antihaemophilic

factor)

Globulin made in the liver, deficiency causes haemophilia A

Co-factor involved in activating factor X

9

Factor IX (Christmas factor)

Plasma protein made in the liver with the help of vitamin K. Deficiency causes haemophilia B

In activating factor X

10

Factor X (Stuart-power factor)

Plasma protein made in the liver with the help of vitamin K.

Converts Prothrombin to thrombin

11

Factor XI (Plasma

thromboplstin antecedent

factor)

Plasma protein made in the liver with the help of vitamin K.

In vivo activated by thrombin and factor IV.

12

Factor XII (Hageman (glass or

contact factor)

Plasma protein made in the liver with the help of vitamin K

Converts plasminogen to plasmin and activating factor IX in fibrinolysis.

In vitro it initiates clotting process.

13

Factor XIII (Fibrin stabilizing

factor)

Plasma protein made in the liver with the help of vitamin K.

Also released by platelets

Converts fibrin polymer to form insoluble particles.
