Discipleship

The Heart of Christian Life

Discipleship-making Jesus Style Pt. 2

Session #8

Homework over Spring Break:  Read the book of Acts - 2 chapters a day will do the trick.

  1. Introduction: Last Week: Jesus’ “Great Commission” –– Wherever you find yourself going…make disciples! –– Raised the question; “How do we do the great commission?” – We set ourselves on a course of seeking to learn from Jesus’ style (way) of making disciples. –– We looked first at the essential quality in Jesus’ life needed to even begin fulfilling His great mission. –– Jesus was Purposeful (Intentional) –– he was out to “make” spiritual change agents (disciples) for a world profoundly in need of men and women who could point others to the way of Jesus and his Kingdom.

  1. Today: Jesus Intentionally Entered Into Real Kingdom Relationships.

    1. The Principal In Action: Mark 3:13 “Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. 14 He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out.”

      1. The Setting: A ____________________ reality, not an _____________________, or a technologically dominated approach.

      1. Jesus was a small group leader!

        1. Why A Small Group?

    1. The Principal In Action: 1John 1:1That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.

      1. The Tone of Intimacy –– Intimacy Is More Radical Than Mere “Personal.”

        1. CCF Small Groups –– Our vision: That every student would have the opportunity to be known intentionally by someone, but not everyone known by everyone.

      1. The Impact of an Example: John writes about what the first disciples “saw and heard” bringing home the truism that, “Some things are taught, others caught.”

  1. Unpacking Attributes and Aims Of JesusRelational Disciple-Making

    1. JesusStyle of Disciple-making Is Marked By Spiritual ____________________ and _____________________________ (Edification) of the Disciple.

      1. Strengthening/EdificationDefined:

        1. The Principle In Action: Luke 22:32 (Jesus tells Peter in response to Peters declaration that he would never deny him,) But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers."

      2. EncouragementDefined:

        1. The Principle In Action:

(1) Mark 8:32 “He spoke plainly about this (his impending death), and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

(2) Luke 17:3 “So watch yourselves. "If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him.”

          1. The Aim of Encouragement:

          2. The End Goal Of Encouragement:

    1. Jesus Style Provides ___________________________________________

      1. The Principle In Action: Luke 10:18-20 (Context: Sending the disciples out on SSI) “However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven." –– Unpack this event – What’s at play here?

      1. CCF Case Study

        1. Three Take-a-ways?

  • Accountability is: welcomed and sought by the wise. (Proverbs Theme: The wise son seeks out wise counsel.) –– The wise do not wait to have protective wisdom dictated or forced upon them.

  • The goal of accountability is: the nurturing of personal internal integrity –– a personal ethos not mere momentary conformity.

  • Ministering accountability has to do with watching, seeing, hearing and speaking. This role is spoken of in the “Watchman” theme of Ezekiel 3:17ff; Matthew 18; and Gal. 6:1-2; etc.

    1. Jesus Style Of Relationship Promotes _____________________

      1. Defining Maturity?

      2. The Principle In Action: Mt. 5:48 ––“Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

        1. Perfect? ––The word perfect (τέλειος) means  ________________________ The Message Version catches the idea clearly, In a word, what Im saying is, Grow up. Youre kingdom subjects. Now live like it. Live out your God-created identity. Live generously and graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you.

        1. Maturity is a biblical __________________!

          1. What About Luke 18:17? Jesus states that no one will enter the Kingdom of God except that he become like a child.

          2. Group Think: How is childlikeness different than childishness?

          3. THINGS TO _____________________________?

          1. The Trajectory of our Life in Relationship to Jesus and One Another:

Ephesians 4: 11 It was he (Jesus by the Spirit) who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ.

      1. Digression: Wanted and Needed: Men and Women With The Courage To Risk In Forming Kingdom Relationships.

        1. It takes courage:

        2. Courage is not equal to:

        3. Courage is born in:

        4. It takes love filled courage:

        1. It takes little risk to simply follow quietly and passively behind others who lead the way. But, Jesus tells his first followers that they must not only courageously risk in stepping out, but they were to pray that the Lord would raise up other leaders.

Mt. 9:36 –– When Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

    1. Jesus Style Aims To ______________________ The Number Of Disciple-Makers

      1. The Principle In Action:

Mk. 6:6-8 “Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village. Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits.”

      1. He Began:

      2. Motto Time: 2 Timothy 2:2 And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.

First, become entrusted, reliable Jesus followers and then pass onto others what has been entrusted to us. 2Timothy 2:2 it –– to the World

      1. Jesus sent His first followers out two by two. Why? –– He embodies the wisdom of: Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 Two are better than one!” ––The return on their work is greater! –– If one falls the other is there to pick him up; but pity the man who has no one to pick him up –– when two lie down together they will keep each other warm, but how can one keep warm alone? A three stranded cord is not quickly broken!

        1. The Message?

What I Long To See: I long to see your generation rising up to embrace the calling of being intentionally relational disciple-making men and women
