SPEAKING
A. Bella Ford, a buyer for Allgoods supermarket chain, is negotiating with Ranjit de Silva, Sales Director for a fair trade organisation in Sri Lanka. Read their dialogue and act out the conversation.
Bella Ford:
If I order five thousand boxes of tea, what discount will you offer us?
Ranjit de Silva:
On five thousand nothing. But if you buy ten thousand boxes, then we’ll offer you ten percent.
Bella Ford:
OK, I’ll think about that. And tell me, if we placed a very large order, say fifteen thousand boxes, would you be able to despatch immediately?
Ranjit de Silva:
We can normally guarantee to despatch a large order within two weeks. But if you order at a peak time, like just before Christmas, it will be impossible to deliver that quickly.
Bella Ford:
I take it your price includes insurance?
Ranjit de Silva:
Actually, no. Usually, you’d be responsible for that. But if the order were really large, that would be negotiable, I’m sure.
Bella Ford:
What about payment?
Ranjit de Silva:
To be honest we’d prefer cash on delivery, as this is our first contact with you. If you were a regular customer, we would offer you thirty days’ credit, may be even a little more.
Bella Ford:
That’s alright. I quite understand.
Ranjit de Silva:
Look, how about having some lunch now, and continuing later that afternoon. Then we could meet for an evening meal.
Bella Ford:
Yes, let’s continue after lunch. If I had more time, I would love to have dinner with you, but unfortunately my flight leaves at seven tonight.
