Gongloff 18 (Mark Gongloff, editor with Bloomberg Opinion. He previously was a managing editor of Fortune.com, ran the Huffington Post's business and technology coverage, and was a columnist, reporter and editor for the Wall Street Journal, 11-14-2018, "Sorry, But It’s Time to Start Thinking About 2020," Bloomberg, https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2018-11-14/2020-election-time-to-start-thinking-about-it-already)

On this day four years ago, roughly two years before the 2016 presidential election, Rand Paul narrowly (and briefly) led a crowded field for the Republican presidential nomination. Donald Trump didn’t even show up in early polls. Thus it might seem ridiculous to think now about the crowded race to be the Democrat facing President Donald Trump (or his replacement) in 2020. But you’re wrong about that, observes Jonathan Bernstein. Now is the time when candidates are scrambling to lock in support and, more importantly, cash for the grueling slog ahead. And it’s the time when party influencers start separating the lightweights from the serious candidates. In that latter group, Jonathan thinks, using history as a guide, are the many senators and governors running. Then again, history was no real guide in 2016.
