The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that 36 identified and designated hospitals are now equipped as Ebola treatment centers. Ebola treatment centers are staffed, equipped, and have been assessed to have current capabilities, training, and resources to provide the complex treatment necessary to care for a person with Ebola while minimizing risk to health care workers.

Sandy Recovery

FEMA's Disaster Assistance Improvement Program (DAIP) has released a new website (DisasterAssistance.gov) to help survivors navigate the disaster recovery process. DAIP helps survivors by shortening the time required to apply for assistance and reducing the number of forms that need to be completed. Survivors can also upload documents; check the status of their application, access information and resources, all through the website. On DisasterAssistance.gov, survivors can:

  Find more than 70 forms of assistance from 17 federal agencies;
  
• 
  Get the latest information on declared disaster such as wildfires, hurricanes, floods and earthquakes;
  
• 
  Find information about evacuating; accessing shelter, food, water and medical services; and assistance locating loved ones and pets;
  
• 
  Locate local resources in and around the whole community; and
  
• 
  Share resources via social media.

Survivors of the World Trade Center disaster who lived in the Tri-State area during Hurricane Sandy experienced multiple types of injuries.

Registry researchers sent surveys to 8,870 enrollees living in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut five months after the storm. Among the 4,435 respondents who lived in flooded areas, 10 percent reported injuries, and nearly three quarters of them had more than one injury. The greatest number of injuries occurred among people who attempted clean-up or repair work in a damaged or destroyed home. The most common injuries were arm/hand cuts and back strain. The risk of injury was greater among those who had more flooding in their homes, whether or not they evacuated. The highest percentage of injuries, about 39 percent, was among responders who evacuated by walking or swimming. Hurricane preparation and messages to warn people about the potential for injury during evacuation and clean-up or repair might help reduce the amount and severity of injuries after a hurricane.

NYDIS - NYC Sandy Unmet Needs Roundtable Emergency Heat Program 

The Fall/Winter Emergency Heat program is designed to, on an emergency basis, fix Sandy- impacted homeowners' furnace/heating, to prevent utility shut-off and/or to secure fuel deliveries. Any current New York City homeowner who is in Superstorm Sandy Disaster Case Management (DCM) qualifies, regardless of FEMA approval or immigration status. Any DCM can call NYDIS to request assistance with an emergency-heat need, Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. A contractor will be dispatched within 12 hours, with the bill to be paid that same day.  DCMs will have three business days to submit the client's data and budget demonstrating Sandy-related unmet needs (budgets do not need to demonstrate sustainability for emergency assistance). In this two-part series, the World Cares Center's Disaster Resiliency Training is designed to educate and empower disaster supervisors. The program's overall objectives are to prepare participants to recognize signs and symptoms of disaster work-related stress, obtain support through your employer/organization and community resources, and build your own resilience by demonstrating stress reduction and coping strategies. The Commodity Distribution Point (CDP) Program is a coordinated, City-led operation to distribute temporarily unavailable life-sustaining commodities such as food, water, ice, and baby formula to the public following an emergency or disaster that disrupts access to traditional supply chains. Primary CDP sites have been identified throughout the five boroughs, one in each community district, to use as points of distribution. OEM is looking to build a team of trained individuals who may be called upon to volunteer at one of these CDP sites during an emergency response. NYC OEM will be hosting monthly CDP trainings for interested volunteers from January to June 2015. You only have to attend ONE session. Event is from 6:30pm-8:30pm.

February 24th - Healthy Homes and Disaster Recovery - Bridging Gaps to Help Residents

The U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) Office of Lead Hazard Control and Healthy Homes (OLHCHH) hosts this one-day workshop to connect with national leaders and existing resources for post-natural disaster recovery and rebuilding. This hands-on event is an opportunity to engage federal agencies and stakeholders in discussing healthy homes concepts across a wide range of natural disasters. The goal is to identify ways to better integrate resources, develop consistent messaging, and build partnerships. Event location: U.S. HUD Weaver Building - Brooke-Mondale Auditorium in Washington D.C.

Sponsored by the Emergency Management Institute (Emmitsburg, MD), this two-day course will train emergency planners how to include disability-and functional needs--inclusive practices in emergency preparedness, response, and recovery plans. Lessons will define disabilities and access and functional needs, identify resources to assist in planning for adults and children with disabilities, and raise awareness of the importance of inclusive practices.
