Awards Programs Overview

Teens attending the Southeastern Regional Teen Conference have the opportunity to participate in several activities and awards programs. The categories are as follows:

Ann Owen Gordon Teen Oratorical Competition

General Rules

1. 
   The Southeastern Regional Teen Oratorical Contest is divided into several phases. The contest begins at the Chapter Level with the selection of a contestant who competes at the Super Clusters. The competition ends with the selection of winners at the Regional Teen Conference.
   
2. 
   Division Two (16 -19 years of age) will compete during the 2014 Teen Conference.
   
3. 
   The topic on which contestants speak is selected at the Teen Conference immediately preceding the new program year. Participants must use this topic. The 2014 Oratorical Competition topic is “Pink and Blue: The American You.”
   
4. 
   The contestant must state the topic at the beginning of his or her speech.
   
5. 
   Orientation sessions for judges and participants will be held prior to the contest to ensure that rules are fully explained and understood.
   
6. 
   Abbreviated rules will be read to the audience at the beginning of the contest.
   
7. 
   The introduction and qualifications of judges will be announced to the assembly at the end of the competition.
   
8. 
   The decision of the judges is final. However, in the event of omissions, or miscalculations, the Regional Director may take appropriate steps to ensure fairness for all contestants.
   

Timing

1. 
   The time allowed for each speech is three to five (3-5) minutes. Contestants may not speak under three minutes or over five minutes.
   
2. 
   Timing will begin when the contestant starts to speak. Any salutations to judges and, audiences will be included in the contestant’s timing. Timing will stop when the contestant finishes his or her speech.
   

Penalties

1. 
   Contestants failing to meet minimum time limits or contestants exceeding the time limits will not be cautioned but will be penalized one (1) point for each 15 second block or fraction thereof over or under the allocated time.
   
2. 
   The time of each speech is tracked and recorded by the Official Timekeeper.
   
3. 
   Each contestant must state the theme of his or her speech at the beginning of the oration. A three (3) point penalty is automatically assessed by the timekeeper for failure to comply.
   
4. 
   The use of props, special costumes, or the use of prompters will not be permitted. The penalty for such an infraction is disqualification. The contestant may, however, use notes, if he or she desires.
   
5. 
   The contestant may NOT identify him/herself or the specific chapter, city, or state that he or she represents. The penalty for failure to comply is a mandatory five (5)-point assessment by each judge.
   

Chapter Teen Community Service Project of the Year

The Region is excited and honored to acknowledge and reward the great community service of our Teens. Jack and Jill proudly instills the importance of giving to all our children – especially for our Teens.

Introduction

• 
  The Teen Community Service Project Award recognizes and honors chapters whose teens have developed and implemented an exceptional community service project during the 2013-2014 program year. This award reinforces Jack and Jill’s emphasis on community service and awards chapters who have done an outstanding job in terms of their teen service project.
  

Awards

• 
  To account for differences in chapter sizes and resources TWO awards will be presented.
  
• 
  There will be one award given to the best teen community service project in chapters with less than 25 members and one award given to the best teen community service project in chapters with more than 25 members.
  

General Eligibility

• 
  Open to ALL chapters in good standing, financial and otherwise within the Region.
  
• 
  Each chapter may submit only one entry.
  
• 
  No on-site entries will be accepted.
  
• 
  The Lead Teen Sponsor is responsible for submitting the Chapter’s entry.
  

Deadline

The Lead Teen Sponsor must complete and submit the Teen Community Service Project Award form by May 1, 2014 to Gwen Thompson Hewitt at jjsermal@gmail.com.

Chapter Scrapbook Competition

Scrapbook contents document service projects and accomplishments of the chapter’s teens, not the chapter in general. Chapter participation is voluntary but highly encouraged. Scrapbooks can be developed using both traditional photos and scrapbooking materials or digitally produced. A physical hardcopy book must be presented; no electronic submissions will be accepted.

  Creativity and the presentation of programming initiatives is highly encouraged

Chapter Step Show Competition

An integral part and highlight of the Southeastern Regional Teen Conference is the Step Show Competition. In the tradition of the African American Greek fraternities and sororities, the step show component fosters togetherness and friendly competition as teens continue to promote and preserve this spirit of culture and heritage.

Step Show Competition Guidelines

• 
  Routines are limited to five (5) minutes.
  
• 
  Time begins on the start of the first word, step or beat of music, and ends on the last word, step or beat of music.
  
• 
  Minimum of five (5) participants per Team
  
• 
  Participation voluntary – no chapter penalty for non-participation
  
• 
  Chapter Teen President and Teen Sponsor must sign Performance Compliance Form.
  
• 
  2014 Judges Score Sheet can be found in the Appendix – note, this may be subject to slight modifications.
  

Grounds for Disqualifications

• 
  Profanity and sexually explicit material
  
• 
  Language, behavior, and gestures that degrade and/or belittle other persons or chapters
  
• 
  Lewd, indecent, or obscene language, behavior, symbols, and movements
  
• 
  Other behavior or situations as warranted and enforced by Regional Leadership Team
  
• 
  Total performance exceeds six (6) minutes
  

Miscellaneous

• 
  Each individual or group is responsible for the music to accompany performance. Contestants must provide the music on TWO clearly labeled CDs.
  
• 
  If necessary, a chapter representative may be asked to remain with the sound technician during the performance.
  

Chapter Talent Show Showcase Presentation

The Talent Show provides an opportunity for teens to present their unique talents in the form of dance, dramatic interpretation, instrumental or vocal renditions. The talent show is not a “judged category.”

  Only one “act” per chapter
  
• 
  Maximum of five (5) participants per Team
  
•

Chapter T-Shirt Competition

Chapter T-shirt returns as a judged chapter entry. Entry should reflect the conference theme. Chapter participation is voluntary but highly encouraged.

Chapter T-Shirt Competition Guidelines

• 
  Use of conference theme: T-Shirt design must reflect the conference theme.
  
• 
  Originality: T-Shirts must be designed by chapter teens.  T-Shirts may be professionally reproduced (i.e., screen-printing, air-brushing, etc.). 
  
• 
  Chapter name must appear on T-Shirt.
  
• 
  Jack and Jill logo must appear on T-Shirt.
  
• 
  Overall Appearance: The T-shirt should represent Jack & Jill and the values of the organization.
  
• 
  Chapter t-shirts will be judged on inclusion of the conference theme, creativity and originality.
  
• 
  The first place Chapter t-shirt will be retained for the Chapter Archives.
  

Chapter Sports/Game Day Events

3^rd Annual Southeastern Region Sports/Game Day Events

Details for the rules and guidelines for each sport/event offered will be provided at a later date.

Only one trophy per team will be awarded. Chapter with the largest number of players will take home.

The region reserves the right to make adjustments in the activities and competitions offered due to space, # of participants, weather and other extenuating circumstances.


Overview of Individual Portfolio Presentations and Arts Showcases

Individual Portfolio Presentations

Portfolio Presentations are the highlight of our Teen accomplishments. Chapters are limited to one submission per category/age division. These high achieving teens and a guest will be recognized at the Breakfast of Champions, as well as receive awards for outstanding submissions.

Individual Portfolio Competition Guidelines

• 
  Only one entry per chapter per category/age division that Chapters must select based on local criteria.
  

Participation voluntary – no chapter penalty for non-participation

The Individual Portfolio Presentations category consists of five (5) categories that allow teens to showcase their individual talents and accomplishments: The categories are as follows:

1. Outstanding Teen (Overall) (No Divisions – No age restrictions)

2. Scholastic Achievement Division One & Division Two

3. Outstanding Leadership Division One & Division Two

4. Outstanding Female Athlete Division One & Division Two

5. Outstanding Male Athlete Division One & Division Two

• 
  All materials must be in a bound media and may not exceed 50 single pages or 25 two-sided pages and materials should include Middle and/or High School activities ONLY.
  
• 
  The letter of endorsement and the cover sheet are not included in the maximum amount of pages allowed.
  

Awards

The awards for the Individual Portfolio Presentations categories are NOT intended to represent first, second, and third place; instead, they are levels of accomplishment with reference to a standard and are intended to more fairly acknowledge the very significant accomplishments of all of our teens.

  All participants in any category will receive a certificate of participation
  
• 
  There are three levels of awards: 1) Distinguished, 2) Excellence and 3) Merit.
  
• 
  There is no limit to the number of awards that may be given at any level except Best in Class.
  
• 
  Only ONE Best in Class award is presented to a single portfolio per category.
  
• 
  Each judge will award a single point to the entry he/she feels represents best entry in each category/age division. The portfolio with the highest number of points receives the Best in Class award.
  

An award does not have to be given at each level if entries do not meet the standards.

Individual Visual Art Displays

The Visual Arts display is not a competition but an opportunity to showcase the artistic talents of the teens. Chapters are limited to the submission of one piece of artwork. Each participant will be recognized, and copies of art may be used throughout the upcoming program year, in regional communications.
