The shaded area indicates an acceptable noise level for optimum teleconferencing.

If the noise level is high enough to distract the Conference the following steps may be taken to minimize or eliminate the effect:

  • The noise source may be examined to determine if it can be reduced or eliminated

  • The FS-03 has presets that adjust the equalization to address acoustically challenging rooms

(See page 15, Presets 2 and 4)

  • People may cause unwanted noise that will interfere with the intended voice transmission during a conference. These noises may be such things as paper shuffling, pen or keyboard tapping, side conversations etc. The FS-03 system has several techniques for minimizing these distractions:

    • The FS-03 provides automatic gating of microphones so the number of open microphones is reduced. Only those microphones close to the intended speaker will be on

    • Presets are provided for presenter/audience environments that allow the presenter only transmission and can be switched to open the entire room for question and answer sessions.

Preset 7 (Presenter Mode) – only opens microphone intended for the presenter
Preset 8 (Q&A Mode) – opens the entire room for audience participation

See page 17 for additional details

Activation of these modes may be as simple as a switch on a wall plate connected to the FS-03 (logic inputs) or through a control system (RS-232).

Reverberation

Reverberation is the reflected sound that exists in a room after the sound source has stopped. Reducing the amount of reverberation transmitted to the distant end is also important in maintaining good intelligibility. A room should have an RT60 of less than 0.6 seconds for good intelligibility.

RT60 is the length of time it takes for reflected sound to decrease to one millionth of its original intensity (-60 dB). Surfaces in a conference room that absorb sound are typically an acoustic drop ceiling, heavy drapes, carpet, wrapped fiberglass wall panels, soft furniture, and people. Locating microphones in domed ceiling areas should usually be avoided. For rooms that are highly reverberant consideration should be given to treatment with acoustical panels or other sound absorbing materials. Additionally, the FS-03 has settings which aid in reducing the effect of reverberation.
