Topic-191: Vowel Properties For exploring the acoustics of vowels in this session, we need to record vowels and explore their properties. The eight vowels from American English (given in your book (Chapter 8) are to be recorded for the purpose (by now, you should know how to record them.
These vowels are heed, hid, head, had, hod, hawed, hood and who’d. When you are done with the recording, get ready for measuring the following
three things intrinsic pitch, spectral makeup (formants) and plotting them in excel sheet (and finally exporting them to your Word document. Now, record yourself saying the words. Take a quick look at your vowels in the Edit window, and make sure you can clearly seethe vowel formants. If
you have trouble seeing them, you can go back to the previous labs and learn it again. While doing this, please make a note of it on your worksheet.
