Il gatto a nove code (The cat o 'nine tails), filmed in 1971, is the second film by Dario Argento, and the collaboration with the composer and conductor Ennio Morricone, already known for his work on Sergio Leone's western movies, is here renewed. When the previous soundtrack for Argento's first movie had proved to be a really tough listen, here Morricone goes even further, creating a really dissonant and avant-garde sound, with practically one single basis theme in the form of a few essential bass guitar notes. Like many other soundtracks of those years, The cat o 'nine tails had to wait more than 20 years to see the light in its entirety, with a single 45rpm released at the time! Today, this score is reissued by AMS Records in LP format with gatefold cover. The first 500 copies come in yellow vinyl. Funded by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, this film is like a Sergio Leone film on a serious dose of brown acid. The soundtrack is comprised of 18 tracks composed by Jodorowsky and John Barham inspired by both the soundtrack work of Ennio Morricone and Nino Rota. Full of flutes and droning horns, accordions and organs and twisted Mariachi styles. The music is as visceral as buzzing flies around the rotting corpse of an evil marauder. Set in a post-apocalyptic future where Neo Nazi group the Surf Nazis have taken control of the beaches and terrorize anyone who steps foot in their territory. Jon McCallum's score suits the post-apocalyptic setting with heavy synth. This limited edition LP is packaged in a deluxe gatefold tip on sleeve with extensive liner notes by Composer Jon McCallum, Director Peter George, and various crew members.
