1917 1943 Stampless cover from Calcutta headed "On Active Service" & addressed to "2nd Lt. John Robertson c/o Col Haswell, Chin Levies, Falam P.O. Chin Hills, via Aijal Lushai Hills" with a Calcutta postage due h/s & cds of Calcutta, Aijal, Falam (Jan 27 & Feb 13) & Haka (Feb 11). The cover was then redirected back to Calcutta & on to Chittagong with arrival cds of both towns (Feb 26-Mar 2). Falam & Haka were two of the 4 towns in the Chin Hills in Burma which were still occupied by the British after the rest of Burma was occupied by the Japanese in May 1942. A runner post was established to carry mail through Japanese occupied territory, between Aijal in the Lushai Hills in India & these four unoccupied towns in Burma (which ceased in Nov 1943 when the Japanese finally occupied all of the Chin Hills). This cover is believed to be the only known item carried by this runner service from India into the Chin Hills & most exceptionally was then carried back to India by the same runner service. A unique & most interesting item of World War II postal history, ex Gerald Davis collection. (P) $2200 $3000

1918 1943 OHMS censored cover (centre fold) franked India KGVI ½a pr & 3p pr, tied by "Falam 19 JLY 43" cds. To Calcutta with censor h/s & arrival b/s. Falam was one of 4 Burmese towns still occupied by the British after the rest of Burma was occupied by the Japanese in May 1942. A runner post was established to carry official mail through Japanese occupied territory, between Alijal in the Lushai Hills in India & the 4 unoccupied towns in the Chin Hills, (which ceased in Nov 1943 when the Japanese finally occupied all of the Chin Hills). It would appear that the supply of Burma stamps at these POs was exhausted at the end of 1942, or early in 1943, & India stamps were then supplied by the Indian PO & authorised for use at these 4 towns in Burma. Only around 6 such usages recorded. A very rare & interesting item of World War II postal history. Ex Gerald Davis collection. (P) $2200 $3000
