Dr David Turley is Emeritus Professor of Social and Cultural History,
University of Kent at Canterbury. He is the author of The Culture of English
Anti-slavery, 1780–1860 (1991) and the editor of American Religion (1998).
Recent essays include Activists and Officials in a volume on British diplomacy and the slave trade and Religion and Approaches to Reform,”
forthcoming in American Nineteenth Century History. He continues to work on two books, Slave Emancipations and After and a study of African-
American social science between the sand the 1930s.
