The World Bank has supported more than 100 developing countries to reform their telecommunications and information and communications technology (ICT) sectors, helping spur investment and modernization that in turn accelerates economic growth and poverty reduction. Loans and technical assistance from both the International Development Association (IDA) and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) have delivered results as diverse as connecting millions of people to cheaper telephone services in Afghanistan to helping residents of rural Nicaragua access the Internet for the first time.
