Infertility
The inability in individuals to achieve fertilization is termed Infertility.
Women with repeated miscarriages are also classified as Infertility.
Infertility in Females
In order for a woman to become pregnant:
i. Egg must be released from one of her ovaries (ovulation)
ii. Egg must go through the fallopian tube toward the uterus
iii. Sperm must join with the egg in the fallopian tube (fertilization).
iv. Fertilized egg must attach to the uterine wall (implantation)
Therefore, infertility can result from problems that interfere with any of these steps listed above.
The risk factors of infertility include age, stress, poor diet, smoking, alcohol, sexually transmitted disease, overweight, underweight, caffeine intake, and too much exercise.
Factors influencing infertility in females include:
Severe endometriosis
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
Ovulation disorders
Elevated prolactin
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
Early menopause
Benign uterine fibroids
Pelvic adhesions
