Inventions: Past and Present
Inventions solve problems and help make life easier. The Wright brothers invented the airplane in 1903. The first flight traveled about half the length of a football field and lasted 12 seconds. Different from today where airplanes can travel long distances. Look how inventions have changed over the years.
How have inventions changed over the years?
The Telephone

Past:

Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1876. The first phone had a trumpet shaped part that was used to speak and to listen. These phones and the ones that followed after were large and not portable.

Present:

On the other hand many people carry small cell phones. They have no wires, unlike earlier phones. Cell phones let people talk all over the world.

The Automobile

Past:

In the United States, brothers Charles and Frank Duryea founded the Duryea Motor Wagon Company in 1893, becoming the first American automobile manufacturing company. However, it was Ransom E. Olds and his Olds Motor Vehicle Company (later known as Oldsmobile) who would dominate this era of automobile production. Throughout the veteran car era, however, the automobile was seen more as a novelty than as a genuinely useful device. Breakdowns were frequent, fuel was difficult to obtain, roads suitable for traveling were scarce, and rapid innovation meant that a year-old car was nearly worthless. (Source: www.wikipedia.org)

Present:

Compared with the cars of the past car propulsion technologies that are under development include gasoline/electric and plug-in hybrids, battery electric vehicles, hydrogen cars, biofuels, and various alternative fuels. Fully autonomous vehicles, also known as driverless cars, already exist in prototype (such as the Google driverless car), and are expected to be commercially available around 2020. The Television

Past:

Television became popular in the 1950’s. The first TVs did not have a remote control. The screens showed pictures in black and white, and the sound was poor.

Present:

In comparison many modern TVs have flat screens. Some can be hung on a wall. Today’s televisions have very clear, colored pictures, and excellent sound.

Then and Now

How much has technology changed in the past 25 years? Take a look at a few of the improvements that have been made.

1980

Present Day

Cell phones weighed about 2 pounds and were almost a foot long. Very few people had one.

In contrast, cell phones weigh less than half a pound and are small enough to fit in a coat pocket.

TVs had screens with minimal details; some were still black and white! Most kids tuned TVs to the Dukes of Hazzard- the number two show in 1980.

Different from the TVs back then, high-definition televisions (HDTVs) produce high-quality, life-like images. Many Americans have their TVs tuned to reality shows such as American Idol or The Voice.

35mm cameras used film to take pictures. The film had to be developed to see the images- a process that usually took hours.

As opposed to the 35 mm cameras, digital cameras have flash memory and a display panel that allows people to instantly see the pictures they’ve taken. People can also take pictures using their cell phones!

Although these inventions differ from when they were originally made there are still similarities in the new versions. Do we still rely on these modern marvels?
