Problem Description

“Jabber for Everyone” is a new offer which is being made available to Cisco customers. The offer makes Cisco Jabber presence and instant messaging (IM) available at zero cost for an end-user license to all employees of Cisco customers who have deployed Cisco Unified Communications Manager for all or even part of their organization. The “Jabber for Everyone” offer provides the complete flexibility of Jabber's Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) capabilities for presence and IM. The full range of Cisco Jabber clients deployable on Windows, MAC, iPad, iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, as well as Cisco Cius, are supported. Customers can also build and deploy presence and IM-enabled applications using the Jabber Web Software Development Kit (SDK).

As part of the offer, existing Cisco customers who are Cisco IP Telephony users can leverage Cisco Jabber clients to control their IP desk phone to initiate and manage calls. Customers who are fully licensed for Cisco Collaboration can easily expand beyond the “Jabber for Everyone” IM and Presence offer to leverage Jabber's complete Unified Communications capabilities, including WebEx Meetings, standards-based voice and HD video (using Cisco's Precision Video Engine PVE technology) across desktop and mobile devices.

NOTE: The COP file can be applied to any version. It will detect if the version is allowed to install the COP file and if the version already has the “Jabber for Everyone” feature built into the software. For any case where the “Jabber for Everyone” feature is not already installed and the COP file is not a replacement to a prior installed COP file, the COP file will not modify the system.
Installation Instructions

  • Obtain the latest version of the ciscocm.free_im_v1.2.cop.sgn file.

*** The COP file installation should occur at low usage time or during a maintenance cycle with little GUI/CLI activity. The COP file installation will restart the License Manager and Tomcat services. The Tomcat service restart will terminate all existing CLI/GUI sessions. ***

  • Install this file on all nodes in the cluster from the "Install/Upgrade" option under "Cisco Unified Communications Operating System Administration."

  • Once file is successfully installed, allow the system a few minutes for the Tomcat service to completely restart before continuing GUI operations and for the CLI command “show version active” to display the results correctly.

*** Some ES and SU versions have all the changes delivered by this COP file. If this is the case, the COP file install will fail and indicate in the scrolling log file that the “Jabber for Everyone” feature is already installed. ***
*** No reboot, restart of the system or restart of any services is required after the COP file has been installed. The GUI or CLI will indicate that a system reboot is required. For this COP file only, that message can be disregarded. ***
COP File Location

The COP file is located in the CallManager 8.6 Utilities area. Below are instructions for navigating to the COP file location.

  1. Go to cisco.com and select “Support” from upper bar.

  2. Select “Download” tab.

  3. Select “Voice and Unified Communications”.

  4. Select “IP Telephony” from bottom right box

  5. Select “Unified Communications Platform” from bottom right box.

  6. Select “Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CallManager)” from bottom right box.

  7. Select “Cisco Unified Communications Manager Version 8.6” from bottom right box.

  8. Select “Unified Communications Manager/CallManager/Cisco Unity Connection Utilities” from the “Select a Software Type” box.

  9. Expand the “Latest Releases” section on the left and select COP-Files.

  10. Find the latest ciscocm.free_im_vX.X.cop.sgn file to download.

Unexpected Issues After Install

The COP file does not modify the GUI, thus there can be unexpected GUI messages seen during certain GUI operations that are no longer applicable. These will not occur in the ES / SU versions that contain the complete set of changes.

  • GUI states the following when assigning capabilities to users after COP file installation. NOTE: Since there are no licensing ramifications of adding CUP & CUPC users after COP file installation, this message is misleading.

Please ensure you have enough License Units for this operation. Do you wish to continue with this bulk assignment operation?”

  • GUI states the following when UN-assigning capabilities. NOTE: You would never need to verify that you have enough licenses to remove capabilities.

Please ensure you have enough License Units for this operation. Do you wish to continue with this bulk assignment operation?”

When a system deploys the COP file, a count of the current number of IM and presence customers is recorded as those are not marked as free. If a customer subsequently upgrades to an ES / SU version earlier than 9.0.1, then that count is reset to the count of IM and presence customers at the time of the upgrade. The customer will need to contact Cisco to receive credit for that difference.
