Boys Jr. Varsity MTA 58 SAR 40

HOME GAME ADMINISTRATOR Rabbi Gary Beitler CPR Person Josh Friedman

Even without one of their leading scorers, Shauli Naumberg, the MTA Lions were able to pull out another victory and remain undefeated at 5-0. MTA jumped out to an early advantage, leading 12-2. SAR battled back to cut the lead down to within 5, but MTA responded to push the lead back to 15 at the half, 30-15. MTA came out firing in the 3rd quarter as the lead rose to 20 at the end of the 3rd, 44-24. SAR would not back down, cutting the lead to 51-40 midway through the 4th quarter, MTA's starters entered the game once again to preserve the lead and the game played at home. MTA got another great game from David Affelbaum, who led MTA with 13 points, while mostly guarding SAR's top guard on the defensive end as well. SAR was led by Marcus with 15 points, but MTA's balanced scoring was too much as Shai Kaminetzky finished with 12 points, Ben Zion Feld had 11, all in the 2nd half, and Jacob Shapiro scored 10 - submitted by Josh Friedman..

HOME GAME ADMINISTRATOR Mrs. Snyder CPR Person Stan Rishty

HILLEL opened with a surprise man to man defense in this game played on the road and the scoring started with Ralph Zagha hitting for 2-0 HILLEL lead which was increased to 4-0.Senior Captain Joel Hyman, Junior Point Guard Jordan Hod and Junior Center David Borghard combined scores to give FRISCH an 8-4 lead. Sammy Krost then scored 4 points for HILLEL to tie the game at 8 and then took a 12-8 lead. FRISCH’s Junior Marc-Alain Weitzen, in another strong appearance, scored on a floater, followed by a Hyman layup to tie the game at 12. With time running out HILLEL’s Krost hoisted a three pointer and it went in for a 15-12 HILLEL lead at the end of the first quarter

When the HILLEL Heat built the lead to 8, 23-15 in the second quarter, the FRISCH Cougars were non-plussed by the huge crowd and the gap in the score. At that point Borghard took a charge and followed that with a bucket. Sophomore Judah Cohen stole the ball and Weitzen hit another shot to cut the lead to 23-19 HILLEL. Then Senior Captain Eytan Potash stole the ball and raced full court to score which was followed by yet another Borghard tally to tie the game at 23 HILLEL went ahead on an Edward Benjamin shot, but Borghard finished the first half on a nice feed from Cohen and the score was tied at 25 as the first half ended. .
Just as he started the game, Zagha started the second half off to with a bucket to tilt the score to 27-25 Heat. Then Zagha followed with a three to extend the lead to 30-25 HILLEL and it was getting to be nervous time for FRISCH. Potash stopped the bleeding with a couple of foul tries, followed by a timely Hod three pointer, to cut the lead to 32-30 HILLEL Then, Cohen drove full court to knot the score at 32 all, and finally, for the first time in the second half, a pretty Hod jumper in the paint gave FRISCH a 34-32 lead with 3:32 left to play in the third quarter. HILLEL was not going to disappoint the crowd easily and engineered a 5 point run giving the Heat a 37-35 lead. That bulge was evened out by Potash at 37 with two foul tries, and once again, the score was tied at the end of a quarter at 37.
To start the fourth quarter HILLEL scored and FRISCH came back on the strength of two Cohen free throws tieing the score at 39, Then HILLEL scored twice again but a delicious series of scores by Potash and Senior Captain Alex Anhalt, FRISCH tied the game at 43. Then FRISCH's Hyman scored on a feed from Potash and FRISCH had the lead 45-43. Zagha scored yet again to knot the game at 45 only to see Potash drive and get fouled and convert both foul shots for a 47-45 FRISCH lead with 3:59 to play. Now it got interesting: Zagha scored for HILLEL to make it 47 all, Potash drove the lane for a 49-47 FRISCH lead with 2:13 to play but not to be undone, HILLEL's Point Guard Al Sultan, who was a thorn all night in the FRISCH Cougar paw, hit a nifty pull up jumper to tie the game at 49.Then HILLEL's star Zagha, hit a three to give the Heat a 52-49 lead with 1:57 to play FRISCH called a time out to regroup. Potash dished to Cohen off a drive, and the Sophomore nailed a three from 5 feet beyond the arc to the right of the top of the key and tied the game at 52 at the 1:30 mark. HILLEL missed from the left corner beyond the arc and FRISCH retrieved the ball.Potash drove and scored once again with 0:32 to play to give FRISCH a 54-52 lead.
HILLEL inbounded the ball with plenty of time on the clock, but Hod stole the ball in the backcourt only to have it retrieved by HILLEL and then retrieved by FRISCH under the HILLEL basket. With 0:03 to play, FRISCH ran its full court bingo play under the HILLEL basket, but the refs ruled that it touched a FRISCH player out of bounds at the 3/4 court mark, all in 1 second! Then the refs convened and added a second to the clock because the clock was started too soon on the previous play.HILLEL now had the ball with 0:02 to play on the right sideline at the 3/4 court mark. HILLEL passed the ball in Hail Mary fashion under its basket, but Hod swatted the ball away. Instead of the game being over, now HILLEL had 1 second left for an inbounds play under its basket. The Heat ran an Alley-oop play but it was stolen by Potash and the game ended with Frisch pulling the squeaker out,
Ralph Zagha finished with 21 points for HILLEL Sammy Krost had 9, but all of those points were in the first quarter.Al Sultan netted 10.
For FRISCH, Potash led the way with his Varsity career high 16. From there, it was balanced scoring as Hod added 8, Hyman 7, Cohen 7, Weitzen 6, Borghard 6 (12 rebounds).Anhalt and Junior Center Asher Fishman added important buckets to keep the Heat cool when it mattered most.
