She says they burned bushels of old letters.
We telephoned the cemetery Trust Co Exr of J.C.C. & Earl A. Morton said I could take the old letter with me for two weeks & I am giving Mrs Maxwell a receipt for 174 letters to be returned by May 15, 1926
Leaving 1 PM
Miss Maxwell pointed out from the kitchen window (the kitchen being the frame part of the old home) the old home across on the left hand side of the road as we came up which has an upstairs or second floor porch above the first floor porch. This where all Robt Carothers children were born. The house looks small, but Miss Maxwell says it has good sized rooms.

At residence of Edward Rolfe Williams No 1216 Macon St, Wilkinsburg, Pa May 1, 1926 2:22 PM
When I got off the street car from Turtle Creek in Wilkinsburg, no one seemed to know where Macon St was & when asking a policeman, corner of Wood & Penn St, Urbane J. Ewing drove along in his auto & took me in & made inquiries locating the place & drove me by where he lives, corner Center & North Aves & pointed out the home of Mrs Judge J. Boyd Duff just across North from him, but I did not have time to stop. Urbane's ten yr old daughter in 5th grade in school was with him & is gathering stamps & asked if I got any foreign ones to send them to her at Miss Betty Ewing, 1116 Center St, Wilkinsburg, Pa & I told her I would. Mrs Caroline Stewart, widow of Major Robert E. Stewart lives here with her daughter, Mrs Williams. Her granddaughter dressed in pants came front from the back yard where she was painting & went upstairs & called her grandmother who is very distinctively a Markle, being below medium height, not as large as Maggie McMasters, but
V16 Page 315
larger than Emma Larimer, but has to a remarkable degree, the H. Cornelia Tinstman aspect. She says she is bothered some with rheumatism.
Referring to her grandmother's children, see book 12 page 338, she said there were two daughters who died in infancy & her mother & one son, Marion Markle. She don't know date of Caroline's birth or death. The name of the other one who Mrs Steen did not give me was Florilla. They both died in infancy at West Newton & she supposes are buried at the Old Markle graveyard. She at first thought they were both older than her mother, but when I gave her date of Caroline's birth 1822 & she gave me her mother's, 1824, she concluded that Florilla was younger than her mother.
Mrs Stewart's brother, John Huey McMasters has a daughter Maud who married Robert S. Maginni (pronounce Majinny) who live at No 429 10th Ave Munhall, Pa, Tel Homestead 1849 M (verify) who Mrs Williams called up & who can give her father's record for which I am to write her. She has no issue.
Maud has an older brother, John H. McMasters who lives Carrick way & has one boy.

My second cousin, Mrs Caroline Markle Stewart of Wilkinsburg, Pa see book 12 p 338 loaned me yesterday afternoon two letters & two rolls all about the Rothermel fortune which she says she recently found among the papers of her father, John H. McMasters & which she said she had not read. The letters are from Jos Bartholomew of Orwigsburgh, Schuylkill Co, Pa the first dated Mch 7, 1854 & the second May 7, 1854.
In the 1st letter, he had recd his letter of Jany 27th & had delayed answering until he could get some information & now reports that he recd a letter "some time back" from Fredk Gentner, Esq of Phila, Pa who informed him that he had been to Monroe Co, Pa. See top of next page) (Stroudsburg, Pa, County seat to which go & search) to see a "lawyer named Buck who says he knows where the family record is which I think is quite important? Says "About 3 yrs ago, we sent a man named Forney from Berks Co to Germany to investigate the matter. He brought back the appraisement of the estate with him & says he had a copy of the will, but would never show it to us & says the money can be obtained but he never would give us a definite answer, he paid him $500 to go & unfortunately for us, he was the wrong man to send. If you think this of sufficient
V16 Page 320
importance to attend to & to see Mr Brock (the name above was evidently Brock & not Buck) let me know. He lives about 50 miles from here". Says he should have gone to see him himself, but it was impossible for him to go & was not able to spend any money at present & says it has cost him more money & trouble than any of the heirs & thinks it the duty of such heirs as have the means to attend to it. Says all the oldest heirs live in this neighborhood (go there & look them up) & invites him to come & make them a visit & investigate signed. Jos Bartholomew
In the 2d letter, he states he had recd his letter of April 13th asking for information concerning the Amsterdam Estate & then goes on to state: "the original legatee was John P. Zimmerman then living in Mainze (was it Mayense) he was married to a woman by the name of Metzgar, they had one son & he died in the age of twenty years, this was all the heir on his side except one sister & she was married to John Rothermel. She immigrated to America in the living time of her brother with the whole family consisting of five sons & one daughter. John Rothermel died on the voyage coming to America. Those Rothermels which immigrated are all dead. There are one or two of the second
V16 Page 321
generation (investigate when there & look up Schuylkill Co Hist here) & some of the third generation living in Berks Co. Any information you want, you will have to get from them. All I know from Forney is this. He showed me the statement of the appraiser & he was in the city of Amersterdam where he was told that the money was there in the bank & he said he had a copy of the will, but would not show it at the meeting. There is a lawyer in Monroe Co, who was out on the same errand as Forney & he has all the papers (see above) he took copies from the original papers out of the office & if you will come to me, I will go along with you to see this man". Wants to know if he is a relation & says if he will come on himself, "I will tell you more about the thing". signed I. Bartholamew [sic]
One of the rolls is five sheets of paper 8 x 10 1/2 inches written on both sides making ten pages & is headed
Rotharmel Heirs
Sets out that Sarah Metzgar married a Zimmerman & had a daughter who married a Rotharmel & they had seven children viz: Christian, John, Paul & other boys I don't remember their names and a daughter.
John Rotharmel had children, one daughter Maria or Mary married

Gasper Markle from which yr heirs spring. She was a full cousin of Peter Rotharmel, my grandfather. He was a son of Christian Rotharmel. John & Christian were brothers. Our ancestorship is traced proved & sworn to down in Berks Co, Pa John J. School the man who got the Forney papers. Forney that tried for the fortune in 1867 1868 & by some means failed, or gave up going on to get the fortune. Here is a copy of the Agents who were appointed to collect money for John J. Scholl in 1867 68 for the fortune.

This man, John J. Scholl who got Forney's papers has the line of heirship of all the different families of Rotharmel, Steinmans & Zimmermans & Metzgars & all the
V16 Page 323
family traced down to the fourth generation & my mother was represented at all the meetings of heirship that was held down in Berks Co viz: Julyann Smith, daughter of Peter Rotharmel & your grandmother was a full cousin of Peter Rothermel. Peter was a son of Christian Rotharmel & your great grandfather John Rotharmel & Christian were brothers. Their will be no trouble to get our line of heirship from Theobald Metzgar down in Berks Co, Pa.
Uncle Benjamin Rotharmel was down at the Allentown Pa meeting in 1868 & he said all of Christian Rotharmel's family was represented by an old man who had lived in the Rotharmel family for almost a hundred years & when Christian's heirs were called out, this old man answered to their names: Peter, Martin, Mrs Stenger, Mrs Grosscup, Mrs Heffner, Mrs Long, Mrs Fegley. Christian Rotharmel landed in this country from Holland Aug 29, 1730. He had seven children.
John Rotharmel heirs
Uncle Benjamin said John Rotharmel's heirs were mostly all represented when their names were called. My oldest sister, Catherine can be qualified to Maria or Mary telling grandmother Rotharmel that she was a
V16 Page 324
daughter of John Rotharmel, a brother of Christian. Uncle Benjamin said her name was not called at the meeting in 1868 at Allentown, Pa, but she can be proven along with us. Christ Scholl, get his deposition that Mary Markle was a full cousin of Peter Rotharmel our grandfather. Don't delay for who knows, hard telling what might happen. Death comes quick sometimes.
Mrs Barbara Steinman was a sister of Theobald Metzgar. He was never married. He died intestate leaving all his fortune to his brothers & sisters. Mrs Barbara Steinman brought suit twice against the government of Holland & they broke her up both times. The King was a rascal & would not give up the fortune & baffled her off, plucky as she was. I have heard my ancestors tell of her suit over & over again & her suit put our claim on record in the courts of Holland & the law that was passed in 1872 abolishing all claimants previous to 1852 debarring the heirs from ever getting anything or opening up their claims is unconstitutional. Her claims & suit are on record as Forneys papers who investigated in Holland will prove. Those papers which John J. Scholl got off of Forney are all down in Berks or Lehigh Co, Pa. If we could get
V16 Page 325
those papers, we could have a clean sail through to the fortune. He has the heirship both of Europe & America. I have written to Berks Co for our heirship. signed. Sam Smith West Newton, Pa.
The above is in the handwriting of Sarah Markle daughter of Shep B. Jr & Belle & who then no doubt (no date on them) was in the office of her Uncle A.O. Tinstman. She married a Mills & lives now at Orange or East Orange, NJ.
I don't know the handwriting on the two sheets which follow viz:
The heirs of Rothermel & Zimmerman estate in Holland will take notice that a meeting was called by the undersigned for Friday Nov 15, 1867 at 10 AM in Aullenbach's hall No 608 Penn St Reading, Berks Co, Pa. The object being to raise money to get someone to go to Holland & get the immense estate for the rightful heirs. Says letters had been recd from Holland offering to buy the shares to perfect title to the property & mentions the estate so amounting to twenty to thirty five million dollars. He urges the heirs to make a final determined effort to get the fortune. States that a recent meeting of the heirs in Lehigh Co, Pa, the following persons work appointed to raise money.

Oak Hill, May 3, 1926 8 AM
In reading the letters 174 in 4 packets, that I got Saturday at the old Carothers home one dated 1st letter Dec 18, 1838 from Col Robert Carothers to his wife Sarah from Harrisburg, Pa speaks of differences & contentions with the "loca focas" in organizing the house & that since his arrival there, he had recd but one letter from her & "one from brother James" & at closing says "I wrote a letter to father, one to Samuel & one to James a few days since". Does he refer to sons when he wrote to Samuel & James (they were but 9 & 11 yrs old see page 312) & I think he referred to brothers.
Miss Maxwell said the desk in which were the old letters & the Robert Carothers Bible was always kept locked & that Joseph C. would never tell his age. Said that desk had belonged to Joseph C's grandfather who owned a farm & lived at Monroeville 3 miles back where the Cross Roads Pres Ch is & she said that Joseph C. owned a farm there, which I presume was that of his grandfather whose name I believe was Charles, see book 9 pages 52 to 57 & the letter from his brother Adam in Ky. In the second room back on right hand side is a high desk being that of Col Robt Carothers which is stuffed full of papers & books.

I believe however the design of the two cut throats was to put Joseph in, but they were detected in time & Stewart went away
V16 Page 334
threatening that he will rule the township with a rod of iron which seems to imply that he intends to serve" etc. James Carothers.
The last three above are from the packet ctg 24 letters & I am now commencing on the packet ctg 59 letters with:
11th letter from
Ellen Carothers, Monroeville, Pa to her niece Miss Margaret Carothers at Saltsburgh, Pa dated Aug 29, 185N [sic]
Says she recd her letter & tokens of friendship with great joy (it is written in a very fine hand small plain letters but in dilation of an elderly person's writing) but says she is bothered with her old complaint & don't get to sleep until 1 or 2 o'c & if it was not for that, David says he would take me to see you, but I am afraid to leave home. Your Uncle is not well with his head. Jane is as well as usual. We had word from your Uncle Charles, they had been sick but better now.
James is working in Allegheny town gets $13 a month & washing & boarding.
Tell Aunt May her mother & sisters were here yesterday. They were well.

(This evidently written by a sister of Col Robert Carothers from the fact of her saying coming home to her "mother & brothers" I would say the indisdinct date above in 1854 as her Margaret's father died May 21, 1853 see page 313 top.)
12th letter.

Says "I was called before daylight this morning to visit father. He had been taken ill in the night with headache & sick stomach accompanied with so much prostration as to alarm the family. I found him suffering intensely with his head & applied a blister to the back of his neck. His faith is triumphant, although he seems to think his time here will be short, but I can't say that I feel alarmed as to the probable result". Says Judge Pentland died last night & that he had been called a few days before to visit him & found him vomiting large quantities of blood from the stomach which he succeeded in stopping for 12 hours but it then returned & killed him (I would infer he is a doctor). She ackd that she knew the note was settled by the bankruptcy proceedings & I told her all my property had been taken from me, but if I could earn some commissions I would try to help her.

Through addresses given me by Mrs James Jackson of Tuscumbia, Ala, now of Dr [best guess] St Memphis, Tenn (& her address was given me by Benj W. Kilgore of Raleigh, NC. whose address was sent me by Miss Estelle Finley of Columbia, Tenn) I have letters from Mrs Margaret B. Johns aged 82 or Corinth, Miss with a closely printed six (14 x 8 1/2 inch) pages of record of the descendants of Benj Kilgore, second son of James Kilgore & his wife Elizabeth Jack & also from Mrs A.V. (see p 346) Stallworth of 251 Mills Ave Spartanburg, S.C. with a one page (11 x 8 1/2 inch) printed history of the children (& their children) of James Kilgore oldest child of Col Benj Kilgore of the Revolution on which important pencilings at top side & bottom appear. & while neither of these Kilgore descendants knew anything of the parentage of their ancestor Col Benj Kilgore, the tradition that both give of 18 sons & one daughter fully & conclusively along with what I have, identify & place him & while the record of Mrs Johns is a little confusing as to just where certain of the descendants given come in, I am starting a genealogical table & it will be a big one on page 344 in which I will embody eight of the sons of James & Elizabeth Jack Kilgore, were in the Revolutionary War viz: Benj, Joseph, Patrick, David, Oliver, Jonathan, William & Jesse & perhaps John.
