For many years, doctors have wanted to help people with cancer to get better. In lots of laboratories all over the world scientists worked very hard trying to discover some kind of medicine that would help. They worked and worked and then one day, along came KEMO SHARK!! Kemo Shark is a strong warrior who can find and kill cancer cells. The doctors were really happy to find out that Kemo Sharks kill cancer, but they were sad about one thing; the side effects.

Even though Kemo Shark has special vision that can find cancer cells, his vision is not perfect. Usually, Kemo Shark swims up to a cell in mom’s body. If it’s a good cell (light pink), Kemo swims by. If it’s a bad cell (red), Kemo kills it with his special stun vision. Cancer cells cannot hurt Kemo no matter how many he eats.

But, sometimes the good cells in mommy’s body are the same color as the bad cancer cells. Sometimes hair cells, finger nail cells, and the cells in mom’s tummy look like the cancer cells. When this happens, Kemo Shark comes along and tries to fight them with his stun vision. Uh Oh!!! These are bad side effects! These are what make mom feel real bad.

The good cells that look like cancer cells really take a beating. They are

knocked out and are sometimes hurt. Luckily, Kemo Shark doesn't kill these

cells. The good cells that are hurt go to the 'Cell Hospital' and get well.

While the cells are resting in the hospital, they can't really do the jobs in

Mom's body they're supposed to do. So, Mom's hair may fall out, or her skin

may get very sensitive and be hurt easily.

When Kemo’s work is finished and mom doesn’t need him to fight the cancer anymore, he leaves her body and goes to another mom who needs help. That’s when the good cells start to get strong again and they go back to work in mom’s body. Mom’s hair starts to grow back! First her eye lashes, then her eyebrows, and finally, the hair on her head. Boy! Is Mom happy! The cancer is gone and her hair is back.

Even though Kemo Shark does a great job fighting mom’s cancer, the scientists and doctors who made the medicines are still trying to find the perfect Kemo Shark. They want to find a medicine that doesn’t taste bad, that doesn’t hurt going into mom’s body, and one that only fights the bad cancer cells, not the good cells.

So, how can kids of moms who have to take these medicines help their moms? Well, one thing they could do is try to understand that fighting cancer is very, very hard work.

Moms get tired, because Kemo Shark accidentally hurts some of the cells that give mom energy. Moms usually look different—their eyes look tired and a little red. Has your mom looked that way? Moms look a little funny without hair.

Sometimes they act different at dinner. They might have to leave the table because the smell of food makes them feel bad, even their favorite food! The moms don’t want to be away from their kids, they just feel bad from the medicine.

Another way to help mom is to understand that she might have to do things that aren’t fair to you. When moms feel bad, some of them have to drink and eat cold foods like apple juice, Popsicles, or watermelon. You see, mom needs lots of extra fluids so she can get well. She knows it might be hard for you to watch her eat 3 popsicles when you can only have one.

The last thing you could do to help Mom and yourself is to ask Mom, Dad, a nurse or doctor any questions you have. If you are worried about something, try to talk about it—to Mom, Dad, Grandma, your teacher, a friend. Who do you think you might talk to? If you are afraid, try not to keep it to yourself, because then it feels worse.

You might have to talk about it lots of times. You could draw pictures of your fears. Or you might want to draw a picture of cancer cells. Then you could blast them with your crayons.

It might be fun to tear up the pictures of the cancer and throw them in the trash.

Remember to get lots of hugs and kisses from Mom and Dad. Don’t forget to give her lots of kisses and gentle hugs. You’ll both feel better.

Let’s cheer Kemo on and thank him for his help!!!
