Welcome to Summer Camp!

Session Two for the Ladybugs’ class

Laughing Kookaburras

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree. Merry, merry king of the bush is he. Laugh, Kookaburra laugh…”

Dear Parents,
In this camp, children will explore the attributes and habitats of the Kingfisher birds (native to Australia) and other birds from around the world that live at the Zoo. Children will have opportunities to observe and encounter birds at the Zoo and in our surroundings. We even have birds in the classroom! We have two parakeets from the Grant Park campus with us this session. We are happy to share that Ms. Mel, our Music educator has been joining us on Mondays. She sings songs about the zoo animals, the Kookaburra song, and other songs that involve singing together and movements.
Some of the experiences we have planned that are related to the Kookaburra bird and the other birds at the Atlanta Zoo aviary include: Learning to recognize the colors and markings of the Kookaburra. We will trace Kookaburras body part on the light table, watch (and listen to) video of the Kookaburra so we can study it up close before we encounter it in the zoo, collage with natural materials like feathers, flowers and sweet gum balls. We will paint with a palette of colors that are found on the Kookaburra to support connection-building between the actual bird, its colors, and the stories we tell when we paint. Plus we are going to the ZOO! A feature of the zoo encounters is the bird show! (Please read details below very thoroughly)

We have also planned two trips to the zoo on Thursday and Friday, June 27th and 28th.
On Thursday June 27th, the whole class will go to the zoo together instead of meeting at the campus. We will meet at the zoo’s main entrance at 9:00 am. Pick-up will happen at 1:00 pm in the same spot. Children who are in Early Arrival will be transported by GPCP staff to the zoo. Children returning to GPCP for Extended Day will be transported by GPCP staff.
On Friday, June 28th, a small group of five children will meet at the zoo. The rest of the class will be at the campus for the day. If you are able to join us for the field trip and you would like to come please let us know.
Please make sure you sign the permission forms and that way you will also know when is your child is going to the Zoo. We are following the lists on the pre-paid Early Arrival and Extended Day lists to determine how to transport children. We may not be able to accommodate add-ons on the day of the field trip. Please keep this in mind.

Drop off will be at the front entrance of the zoo. Children need to be brought directly to the educator. We will have lunch at the zoo in a designated area. Pick-up will happen at 1:00 pm at the front entrance also. You will need to get your child from the educators directly. This way we can ensure all children are accounted for at all times. If your child will be staying in Extended Day please make sure you leave the car seat with us and sign the permission form.

Some logistics to keep in mind:

  • Each child needs a water cup that is labeled.

  • Please come to school with sunscreen and bug repellent on.

  • During field trips to the zoo, we will have lunch picnic-style. We cannot heat lunches at the zoo.

  • The field trip forms MUST BE SIGNED in order for children to attend.

  • Please make sure we have a full change of clothing including shoes at school with each item labeled.

A word on Parent Helpers:

Although Parent Helper days are not required during summer camp, a sign-up calendar will be posted for families to volunteer as a parent helper during the summer. Please consider signing up for at least one day this summer. The participation of parents enriches the quality of the work and your presence is missed by children and educators during the summer!

! Here’s a fun little song you can sing or turn into a tickle game with your child…

Ha, Ha, Ha

Ha, ha, ha, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle.

Ho, ho, ho, giggle, giggle, giggle.

Ha, ha, ha, hee, hee, hee…

Some Kookaburra bird laughed at me!

Happy Summer!
