Real J. Cyr, of Winslow, on his being inducted into the Holland Club of the United States Submarine Veterans, Incorporated, USS Maine Base. The Holland Club was formed to honor those submarine sailors who have attained the benchmark of at least 50 years since first qualifying by serving on a submarine. Mr. Cyr retired from the United States Navy Reserve as a Chief Electrician's Mate, EMC (SS), and is a life member of the United States Submarine Veterans, Incorporated, and Submarine Veterans of World War II. He first served on board the USS Herring for 4 war patrols in the Atlantic Theatre and also on board the USS Croaker for 2 war patrols in the South Pacific Theatre. Mr. Cyr also served aboard the HMS Seraph, a British submarine, during the war and was captured and interred as a Prisoner of War by the Germans, until he escaped on his way to a POW camp. He served on board the USS Irex and the USS Clamagore after the war. Bruce Gamage, of Rockland, on the occasion of his 80th Birthday, April 6, 2006. Mr. Gamage, known as "Nitro," is a retired police officer and a United States Army veteran of World War II, where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Marion S. Hall, of Rockland, on the celebration of her 90th Birthday, October 15, 2006. Mrs. Hall was born in Camden and was married to George, who is now deceased. Nicholas J. Cyr, of Millinocket, a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 58, who has attained the high rank and distinction of Eagle Scout. This is the highest award in Boy Scouting and is given for excellence in skills development, leadership, personal growth and community service. Albert Girouard, of Rumford, upon the occasion of his 100th Birthday. Born on November 3, 1906 in Mexico, Maine, he was self-employed. Gary Utgard, Jr., of Sanford, upon the occasion of his retirement as Fire Prevention Officer of the Sanford Fire Department after 20 years of dedicated service. Alfred Fogg, of Freeport, who was a member of the 133rd Construction Battalion of the United States Navy Seabees during World War II, on the occasion of his receiving the Purple Heart Award more than 61 years after the end of the war. Mr. Fogg was part of the second wave of forces that landed on Iwo Jima, which was an important strategic victory of the war. We acknowledge his dedicated service to his Nation in its time of need and we salute him on his receiving this deserved medal; (HLS 2283)

Eric Spaulding, of Lewiston, a member of Outpost #16, who is the recipient of the Royal Rangers Gold Medal of Achievement Award, which is the highest award in the Royal Rangers program. The Royal Rangers is a Christian ministry for boys. Its teachings emphasize local church and community involvement along with Bible study, nature-related activities and physical skills through age-specific activities and recreation that encourage self-esteem building. Eric has been a member of Outpost #16 for ten years and is the first member of the Lewiston First Assembly of God Church to earn this award. In addition to completing his service project of building an outdoor portable soup kitchen, he has earned a total of 33 merit badges and is now training to become a Commander in the Rangers. We extend our congratulations to Eric on his receiving this award, which represents years of dedication and commitment, and we wish him continued success within his church and community; (HLS 2285)

Staff Sergeant Jonathan D. Williams, of Augusta, who has returned to legislative employment in the Law and Legislative Reference Library following his call to active duty and deployment to Iraq with the 619th Transportation Company in 2004. Jon returned to work on October 10th after recuperating from injuries he sustained during an attack on a pipeline when his convoy was passing over a bridge above the pipeline. He has been an employee of the Legislative Council since 1988 and has previously worked at the Maine State Library. We extend our appreciation to Jon for his commitment to the United States military; (HLS 2286)

Benjamin L. Rines, Sr., lifelong resident of Wiscasset and prominent member of the community. Mr. Rines graduated from Wiscasset Academy and was class president in the class of 1943. He served in the United States Marine Corps in the post-war occupation of Japan. He also served as commander and treasurer of American Legion Post #54 in Wiscasset. He coached a winning Little League team and served a term on the town's budget committee. He was a trustee of the Wiscasset Water District for 15 years. He was first assistant fire chief on the Wiscasset Fire Department, retiring in 1991 after 50 years of service. He worked at Central Maine Power Company's Mason Station for 32 years. We acknowledge Mr. Rines' dedicated commitment to his community, to the State of Maine and to the Nation. Austin Achorn, of Waldoboro, for his longtime service to the Waldoboro Fire Department. Born in Waldoboro on May 7, 1926, Mr. Achorn has been a member of the department since 1944. His past employment includes working for GTE Sylvania and as a self-employed electrician. He is father of a son, Robert, and three daughters, Colleen, Wanda and Nancy. In addition to his longtime commitment to firefighting, Mr. Achorn enjoys hunting, fishing and roller-skating. We acknowledge his dedicated service to firefighting and to his community, and we send him our appreciation; (HLS 2288)

Gail Anderson, of Brunswick, for her many years of dedicated teaching in the Brunswick school system. Mrs. Anderson is a fourth-grade teacher at the Longfellow School, where she has taught for 31 years. She is a 1973 graduate of the University of Maine and first taught for 2 years at the Coffin School in Brunswick. Her husband Scott Anderson is also a 33-year veteran teacher in Brunswick. We acknowledge her 33 years of commitment to the children of Brunswick and we send her our best wishes for her continued success; (HLS 2289)

Carl Earsel Porter and Beverly Mae Kinney Porter, of North Berwick, on their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Porter were married at the Nazarene Church in Farmington Falls on November 10, 1956. They spent several years in Massachusetts before moving to Berwick, Maine in 1964. Mr. and Mrs. Porter have been very active in family and community life over the years while raising their children Deborah, Stephen, Rebekah and James, all of whom live in Maine. Donald E. Helstrom, Sr., of Millinocket, a veteran of World War II. Mr. Helstrom was a graduate of Stearns High School and served in the 10th Mountain Division of the United States Army. He was employed by the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad until his retirement in 1979 after 38 years of service. He will be greatly missed and long remembered by his loving wife of 65 years, Grace, his family and his friends; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 2291)

Alex Parks, of Bangor, Cadet Commander of the Bangor-Brewer Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, on his participation as a member of his unit's honor guard team and his 4 winter survival challenges. Cadet Commander Parks, who is blind, credits the Civil Air Patrol, the civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force, with giving him a sense of responsibility and leadership. We acknowledge his exemplary service to his community and to the Civil Air Patrol, and we send him our admiration and appreciation for his commitment and hard work; (HLS 2292)

Lorraine Jean D'Arc Ruel, lifelong resident of Sanford, and active member of the community. Mrs. Ruel was a devoted wife and mother who enjoyed sewing, traveling and helping her family and friends. She and her late husband Louis were very active in the Democratic Party. Mrs. Ruel was a member of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, the Ladies of St. Anne, the VFW Auxiliary No. 9935 and the National and District of Sanford AARP. the Maine Troop Greeters, of Bangor, who have now greeted 400,000 military personnel as they travel to and from harm's way. The loyal core of greeters have met over 2,000 flights at Bangor International Airport. Their actions have comforted the young men and women of our armed forces and have brought great credit to Maine and the Bangor region. We acknowledge their dedicated service to the United States Armed Forces, and we send them our appreciation for their heartfelt efforts; (HLS 2294)

the Honorable Harlan Baker, of Portland, former member of the Maine State Legislature and longtime member of the Portland Democratic City Committee and the Cumberland County Democratic Committee, for his dedicated service to the City of Portland, Cumberland County and the State of Maine. Mr. Baker served in the Maine House of Representatives from 1979 to 1988, representing the Parkside area of Portland. He was a founding member of the Democratic Socialists of America organization. He served as Chair and has held several other offices of the Portland Democratic City Committee and most recently served as Second Vice Chair of the Cumberland County Democratic Committee from 2004 to 2006. Detective Inez M. Dudley, of Brunswick, on the occasion of her retirement on September 15, 2006 from the Brunswick Police Department after 21 years as a police officer. Detective Dudley was originally hired as a Dispatcher for the Brunswick Police Department in 1975, working there until 1983 and returning in 1984. She was appointed a police officer on September 6, 1985 and attended the 54th Municipal/County Basic Police School. On September 26, 1990, she was assigned to the detective division. On May 18, 2000, Detective Dudley was sworn in as a detective for the Maine Attorney General's Office Maine Computer Crimes Task Force. We acknowledge her dedicated service to her profession and to the people of her community. We send our congratulations and best wishes to her on her retirement; (HLS 2296)

Lincoln Grush, of Wilton, on the occasion of his showing World War II video footage of his experiences of bombing missions during the War. Mr. Grush was a captain in the United States Air Force and was flying his 25th bombing mission when his flight received word of the unconditional Japanese surrender in August of 1945. One of the officers in his unit shot film of his flights, including during an actual bombing run, and this was later professionally made into a video. Mr. Grush, who was awarded the Bronze Star for heroism, is to be commended for his valor during the War and for sharing his extraordinary experience through memorabilia and film; (HLS 2297)

the Foxcroft Academy Ponies, coached by George Rolleston, on winning the 2006 Eastern Class C Boys Cross-country Championship. We extend our congratulations and best wishes to the Ponies on this accomplishment; (HLS 2298)

Scott Dyar, of Strong, who was named by the selectmen of the Town of Strong as a recipient of the 2005 Unsung Hero's award. Fire Chief Dyar has worked to protect the town and helped to make the Strong Fire Department one of the best in Franklin County. Eileen Miazga, of Strong, who was named by the selectmen of the Town of Strong as a recipient of the 2005 Unsung Hero's award. Brett DeLawter, of Lewiston, a member of the Adventure Rangers, Outpost #16, Northern New England District, who is the recipient of the Royal Rangers Silver Medal of Achievement Award. Royal Rangers is a Christian ministry for boys. Its teachings emphasize local church and community involvement along with Bible study, nature-related activities and physical skills through age-specific activities and recreation that encourage self-esteem building. Brett is in the eighth grade. In earning this award, the second highest in the program, Brett has received 30 or more merit badges in activities such as safety, tool craft and first aid-CPR. He willingly took on a leadership position by serving admirably as a Patrol Guide for three months. This award represents years of dedication and commitment and is a commendable accomplishment. We extend our congratulations to Brett on his receiving this significant honor and wish him continued success within his church and community; (HLS 2307)

Trevor Baillargeon, of Auburn, a member of the Adventure Rangers, Outpost #16, Northern New England District, who is the recipient of the Royal Rangers Bronze Medal of Achievement Award. Royal Rangers is a Christian ministry for boys. Its teachings emphasize local church and community involvement along with Bible study, nature-related activities and physical skills through age-specific activities and recreation that encourage self-esteem building. Trevor is in the seventh grade. In earning this award, Trevor has displayed his excellence in skill development through his completion of numerous required merits. The Bronze Medal of Achievement requires Long Rifle advancement and three hours of Christian service in the church; two Red Merit Achievements of tool craft and safety training; and five Gold Merit Achievements, which were camp safety, advanced swimming, physical fitness, first aid with CPR and numerous lessons from the Bible. Swimming and horsemanship were Trevor's two merits of choice. This award represents years of dedication and commitment and is a commendable accomplishment. Alan S. Gardner, of West Bath, a virtuoso performer and composer and notable martial arts instructor, known for his generosity and great sense of humor. Mr. Gardner attended Bates College and studied composition and arranging at the Berklee College of Music. He founded and led the Bates College Big Band, and was musical director and conductor for the Bates College Theater Orchestra. He studied the Turkish Makam system of composition and was a virtuoso of the oud and a master of the G clarinet. Proud of his Armenian heritage, he was a popular performer and recording artist of Armenian, Arabic, Greek and original music in both the folk and classical traditions. Mr. Gardner was director of the Bowdoin College Middle East Ensemble and a faculty member at the Arabic Music Retreat at Mount Holyoke College. Just as notable as his music career was Mr. Gardner's excellence as a professional martial arts instructor for more than 31 years. He studied karate and kung fu and was full contact Kuo Shu champion in 1968 and 1969. He was also honored as "Cultural Athlete of the Year" by the Chinese Embassy. Mr. Gardner served as martial arts instructor at Bates and Bowdoin Colleges and at Harvard University, along with teaching various police departments in Maine and Massachusetts. He established Wu Hsing Shan in Bath in 1975 as a traditional Japanese and Chinese martial arts school, which has taught hundreds of students self-defense, physical and spiritual well-being and character development. He will be greatly missed and long remembered by his loving wife, Suzan Steer, his family and his many friends; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 2309)

Samuel G. Cushing, of Scarborough, of Boy Scout Troop #47, who has earned the high rank and distinction of Eagle Scout, the highest award in Boy Scouting. This award is given in recognition of excellence in skills development, leadership, personal growth and community service. Samuel began his scouting career in Texas, while his family was based at Biggs Army Airfield/Fort Bliss. He then went on to participate in Pack #774 in North Carolina. He has been an active member of the Order of the Arrow, the Boy Scouts' National Honor Society. For his Eagle Scout service project, he planned and constructed a swinging bench along the trail on Mackworth Island, overlooking Casco Bay. Dolores Lymburner, of Steep Falls, for her dedication and commitment to the Town of Standish. Mrs. Lymburner has been an active member of the town in many ways, including helping with the development of a Special Waste Ordinance. Mrs. Lymburner has served as an advocate for a variety of causes, such as the Safe Community Coalition and the Public Safety Committee, and has helped to keep the tax rate low and to retain the rural character of the town. She was elected to the Standish Town Council in June 1999 to represent Steep Falls and served for eight years. Bob Boilard, of Biddeford, original member and longtime supporter of the Saco River Corridor Commission, entrusted with the duty of protecting the 1,697 square miles of the Saco River basin. Mr. Boilard has lived on a hill overlooking the Saco River in Biddeford since the 1940s and has been committed to protecting the quality of Saco River for many years. the Honorable Jean B. Chalmers, former legislator and prominent citizen of Rockland, on her dedicated service to the community and the State of Maine. As she is moving away from the area where she has lived since 1973, it is fitting that we honor her for all her contributions. Ms. Chalmers was elected to the Maine State Senate in 1984 and represented District 21, serving from 1985 to 1986. She has served on numerous town committees and commissions, such as the Rockland Charter Commission, the Fish Pier Committee, the Ad Hoc School Funding Committee and the Library Advisory Committee. She also served on the City Council from 1982 to 1993 and the Zoning Board of Appeals from 2003 to 2006.
