GETTING THROUGH TO YOUNG DRIVERS AT RISK:

STUDENT ADVOCATES TRAINING TO RAISE HIGHWAY SAFETY AWARENESS

(CALLAWAY GARDENS, GA) This weekend more than 180 students from Georgia colleges and high schools will gather here to learn how to save lives on our highways equipped only with their clever conversation and common sense. The two-day conference hosted by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety will help this group of student-advocates focus on new ways to communicate life-saving ideas to their fellow students in Georgia schools.
“It’s called peer education and it works,” says Director Bob Dallas of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. “We provide the learning environment and the motivational speakers here and then these remarkable student highway safety advocates provide a most effective method to help influence their peers away from life-threatening decisions.”
This Youth and Young Adult Highway Safety Conference marks the first time GOHS has planned a collaborative effort between students from thirty Georgia high school groups and fourteen Georgia Colleges. The high school groups are called SADD, a name that symbolically stands for “Students Against Destructive Decisions”. At the university level, student chapters of the “BACCHUS & GAMMA” peer education programs carry-on the lifesaving work.
Says GOHS Director Dallas, “The concept is this.. if you want to effect changes in youth behavior, then you must pursue those changes through their own peer group.” This year’s conference is geared to expose Georgia students to the new ideas currently working well in other school systems and to make the young safety activists better peer educators. “We want them to realize the many innovative ways for their chapters to raise awareness about the harm that can result from drug and alcohol use and impaired driving,” said Director Dallas.
To encourage Georgia’s young safety advocates to excel, GOHS has lined-up two nationally recognized motivational speakers for the conference.

Inspirational youth speaker Judson Liapply is himself a former member of SADD and the BACCHUS & GAMMA peer education initiatives. Known for his inspirational comedy approach, Judson uses the power of laughter to leave a lasting impression on his audiences as he conducts workshops on clear communications skills.
Judson Liapply is joined on the conference agenda by our keynote speaker, Heather Schultz. Heather has been a featured speaker at the National Sadd Conference. With a degree in nursing from central Michigan University, Heather Schultz is a highly requested author and national motivational speaker who travels the country with a passion for inspiring youth. Through her stories of personal triumphs, Heather encourages young people to believe in themselves and to become a positive force in their world.
Every year this conference is designed to help Georgia’s student safety advocates focus on the consequences of poor decisions that young adults make without regard to the long-term impact on their lives. “We get them talking about major decisions like DUI & drug use, as well as simple things, like failure to use safety belts. These all can result in injury crashes and deaths,” said Director Dallas. “Our goal at GOHS is to have these highway safety advocacy and peer education programs available in every Georgia public high school and university.”
