9 a.m.—United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) annual meeting, open to all journalists, Cabildo A-B-C, Hyatt Regency

Approximately 8:18 p.m.—National championship game, Louisiana Superdome.



ACCESS TO MEDIA AREAS

Media may pick up credentials at the Gate A Ground entrance to the Superdome. This entrance is located on Poydras Street.


A media credential permits admittance to the Superdome through any turnstile; Gate B will give the easiest access to the media work room and the playing floor for those staying at the Hyatt Regency. The credential provides admittance to the work room, interview room and locker rooms.
Credentials are required at the Friday practice sessions for access to the working areas at the Louisiana Superdome.

MEDIA WORK ROOMS

Media guides, participant releases, updated statistics, other information and a limited number of telephones will be available in the media work rooms at the Hyatt Regency and at the Superdome. The media work room at the Hyatt Regency will be open from 8 a.m. to midnight each day beginning Thursday, April 3, until Tuesday evening, April 8.


Media representatives desiring assistance after the games should contact local media liaisons Judy Willson of the Sun Belt Conference, Mike Bujol of the University of New Orleans, or any member of the NCAA media coordination committee.

POSTGAME INTERVIEW POLICY
All coaches and student-athletes will be available for interviews.
The coach shall designate before a game a minimum of two starters to report to the interview area immediately after the locker room opens. The NCAA will distribute the names of these individuals before the end of the game. The media coordinator also may require the coach to include a non-designated student-athlete to join or replace the announced group in the interview room should the player’s performance merit.
If requested, both the winning and losing coaches shall grant postgame interviews (not to exceed four minutes) to CBS and/or the NCAA Radio Network, provided that the network is still providing live coverage from the arena.
Neither network shall inordinately delay the coaches’ return to the locker rooms. If the networks are not prepared to conduct live interviews immediately, it may be necessary for the interviews to be taped. The losing-coach interview would be taped off the court near the locker room. (The NCAA media coordination committee shall have the responsibility to terminate the four-minute interview period.)
The NCAA will assign individuals to escort the coach and players from the locker room to the interview room to ensure that all representatives arrive at each news conference at the scheduled time. The participating sports information director also shall accompany the group.
A “cooling-off period” has been set aside for a coach to be with his student-athletes in the locker room after the game. The period begins when the coach enters the locker room immediately after the game or interview with CBS or the NCAA Radio Network. The period will be five minutes for the winning team; 15 minutes for the losing team. A coach may shorten the cooling-off period but may not extend it.
Once the coach and players representing the winning team exit the locker room to participate in the postgame news conference, the locker room shall remain closed for another five minutes to permit those student-athletes who desire to shower to have that opportunity before the room is open to the media. The losing team’s locker room shall be open to the media after the cooling-off period.
The locker room shall be open to the media until 30 minutes after the cooling-off period ends, provided that media representatives are present the entire time. Student-athletes who do not play in the game may depart earlier.
The winning coach and players shall be scheduled in the interview room before the losing coach and players.
Regardless of any personal regular-season radio or television contract, the coach first is obligated to the entire media staffing the tournament and must report to the interview room immediately after the cooling-off period. After fulfilling this commitment to the media staffing the tournament, the coach and players may participate in a special interview.
The coach cannot delay a postgame interview with the covering press to conduct a program for a single newspaper, radio or television reporter unless requested to grant a short interview (not to exceed four minutes) by CBS or the NCAA Radio Network.
Should a coach permit one media representative to enter the locker room before the cooling-off period has expired, the locker room shall be open to all other media representatives desiring access to the area.
The coach shall accompany the student-athletes to the news conference.
All electronic media desiring to record the proceedings in the interview room shall be required to use the connecting devices supplied by the NCAA. No individual filming of the interviews will be permitted.

BUS SHUTTLE SERVICE

The NCAA will provide media shuttle service from the media hotels to the Louisiana Superdome, Thursday through Monday, although it is anticipated that most media representatives lodging at the Hyatt Regency will prefer to walk. The NCAA will also provide complimentary shuttle service for the media to and from the hotels and the airport according to the following schedule:


Wednesday, April 2 10 a.m.–midnight (airport to hotel)

Thursday, April 3 9 a.m.–midnight (airport to hotel)

Friday, April 4 9 a.m.–midnight (airport to hotel)

Tuesday, April 8 5 a.m.–6 p.m. (hotel to airport)



RESERVED MEDIA PARKING

Limited reserved media parking will be available at the Louisiana Superdome. Please submit parking requests to Bill Hancock at the NCAA, 317/917-6499.



SATELLITE TRUCK PARKING

Limited reserved satellite truck parking will be available at the Louisiana Superdome; the fee will be $250. Media should submit requests to Steve Fink at the Louisiana Superdome, 504/587-3570, fink@superdome.com.



TELEPHONES/COMMUNICATIONS
A limited number of telephones will be available in the media room at the Louisiana Superdome. However, media representatives wishing to guarantee that a telephone is available should order a line for exclusive use by calling the NCAA Premium Contact Center at 888/838-8080.

RADIO FREQUENCY COORDINATION

Agencies using portable radios should contact the frequency coordinator, Steve Fink at the Louisiana Superdome, (504) 587-8885, steve.fink@superdome.com



STATISTICAL SERVICES

Play-by-play, first-half and final statistics, quotes and championship notes will be distributed during and after each game.


Messengers will deliver these materials to all media areas. Statistics also will be available at the interview room exit after the postgame news conferences.
“Quickie” statistics (leading scorers and rebounders) will be announced immediately after each game, and “quickie” quotes will be distributed immediately after the national championship game. The sports information director of each competing team and two writers designated by the United States Basketball Writers Association are responsible for the “pool” quotes.

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM

The USBWA will distribute ballots to certified media representatives at the conclusion of the championship game to elect a five-person all-tournament team, which includes the most outstanding player. The team will be announced immediately after the game.



WAITING AREA FOR SPOUSES AND DATES

After the final game of each session, spouses or dates of media representatives may wait in the lower portion of Section No. 145 at the Louisiana Superdome for their escorts. This will permit arena personnel to begin securing the property and provide a comfortable waiting area.
