Entertainment



  • Jimmy Kimmel doubled down on his criticism of the new Republican health-care bill. His initial criticism came after a strong backlash from conservative pundits and politicians. Kimmel defended his stance and doubled-down on his rhetoric, all the while several other late-night comedy hosts (Colbert, Noah, etc.) criticized the bill.

  • Leonardo DiCaprio’s foundation donated $20 million grant to help combat climate change. He believes the US still has potential to lead the world on this issue. This donation came from a two day climate change conference moderated by former US Secretary of State John Kerry.

  • Billy Bush and his wife Sydney Davis are separating after 20 years of marriage. Billy Bush was a former co-host of the "Today" show. The split comes after a year after Bush left "Today" due to a leaked "Hollywood Access" conversation he had with Donald Trump in 2005. 

  • Actor, Liam Hemsworth speaks up in support of gay marriage. He posted a photo encouraging Australians to support same sex marriage since Australia has an upcoming vote on whether to legalize same sex marriage. He shares that it should be a human right to marry anyone regardless of gender.

  • By winning several awards at the Emmys, Hulu emerges as a major network. First time the network received awards for their shows. "The Handsmaid's Tale" turned the network into a viable competitor against Netflix, as well as traditional TV networks like HBO and Showtime.

  • Kate Walsh reveals that she had a brain tumor; she was diagnosed and had surgery to remove the tumor. She felt exhausted and thought the symptoms were from menopause but she realized it seemed to get worse. She went to get checked and found out she had a tumor the size of a small lemon, later she went in to get surgery to get it removed.

International

  • A second suspect was arrested on Saturday in connection with the subway attack at London’s Parsons Green station that left 30 people injured, officials announced on Sunday as the city’s terror threat level is downgraded to “severe.” A 21-year-old man was arrested late Saturday night  in west London. Another 18-year-old man was arrested earlier in the day at the port of Dover, where ferries leave for France, and is also being held. The suspects' names have not been released and no charges have been filed. 

  • The magnitude-7.1 earthquake struck near the town of Raboso in Puebla, about 76 miles southeast of Mexico City, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. At least 25 bodies were recovered from Escuela Enrique Rebsamen – all but four of the victims were children. By Wednesday, the death toll stood at 217 after the quake toppled homes, schools and apartment buildings. 

  • On Wednesday while Iranian President Hassan Rouhani addressed the United Nations General Assembly, thousands of Iranian expats rallied outside in midtown Manhattan and called for an end to the Islamic republic's brutal regime. They claim they want a "democratic, secular and non-nuclear republic of Iran,” The group also called the UN to investigate the mostly forgotten massacre that happened in the summer of 1988, when some 30,000 political prisoners in Iran were executed. 

Health

  • Researchers found that high levels of magnesium in your blood may be linked to developing dementia later in your life. The findings aren't proven yet but the theories they have after countless tests are interesting. They suggest that having low levels of magnesium can cause inflammation which could cause an increase in dementia risk.



  • Dieting fails for most people due to the fact that the brain regulates how fat your body is. So when the body losses large amounts of weight your brain will intervene and try to make you the weight it thinks is best for you. The brain will cause you to eat more than you would like during your healthy diet and you won't realize you’re eating more until it’s too late. This makes people gain more weight while dieting than people who don't diet.



  • From a recent breakthrough in synthetic biology cells can now be programmed like a computer to fight of conditions like cancer and influenza. The way they have done this is they altered the way that RNA receives and interprets information. This causes other cells that listen to what the RNA tells them to do to fight off the diseases in the body.

Sports

  • Wayne Rooney has gotten his driver’s license suspended for two years after pleading guilty to drunk driving. He was three times over the legal limit. 

  • Four Westside (Anderson, S.C.) students who attended a football game this weekend have been punished after spelling out “rape” on their stomachs and sharing a photo of it across social media. The game was part of the “Touchdown Against Cancer” series.

  • Ex-Bears cornerback Charles Tillman is in training for the FBI. The FBI requires people to be younger than 37 to be an agent. Tillman, 36, just makes the cut. It's unclear what type of role he's pursuing. 



  • Kansas City Royal, Alex Gordon hit the home run to pass the previous record of 5,693 in the MLB. The entire league has hit 5,694 home runs. The previous record was set in the year 2000, which was the climax of the "Steroid Era" 

  • A woman was hit with a 105 mph foul ball at Yankee Stadium. She had to be carried out of the game and taken to the hospital. The Yankee Organization is expecting calls to extend the protective netting



  • A professional football player Bernie Casey who was also a poet, painter and actor. Bernie played for the 49ers and played in many movies. He died after an illness on Tuesday in Los Angeles. he was 78

Local

  • Man dies in car crash in Wyoming County. The car crashed with a tractor trailer 5 am Tuesday morning. They did not say what caused the crash.

  • A arm robbery happen in Pittston township. The cashier at the Pilot truck stop said the arm robber got away with 1200 dollars and 4 cartons of cigarettes. The robber then proceeded to Luzerne County.

  • In the Blue Mountain High School there threats written on the bathroom wall. The threats said "September 16th 2017 the school goes boom". The police were called and they are still looking for the student that made the threat.

  • A former priest from Schuylkill County is going to jail. He pleaded guilty in June to possessing child pornography. He was vice-principal at Marian high school. 

  • In Schuylkill Haven there was a fire. The fire started around 4am. Everyone got out safe and police are still trying to find the cause of the fire.

  • In Porter Township there was a crash that a 47 year old man went off the road and hit a fence then a tree. Troopers did not say how the crash happen.

Odd

  • A truck driver was in New Jersey on Wednesday and made a wrong turn. This wrong turn took him onto the boardwalk at Atlantic City. The driver said he was just listening to his GPS. He followed the boardwalk for about 3 miles before realizing that he had to turn around.

  • Police in Colorado are looking for a jogger who poops in public neighborhoods on her jogs. People in the neighborhood call her the "mad pooper." People put signs up asking her to stop. 

  • A Christian 'researcher' claims the rapture begins on Saturday. The rapture is when certain Christians will get sucked up to Heaven while the Earth becomes a chaotic mess for the people who are left. 

  • A koala bear rode behind the tire of a car for 10 miles. The koala clung to the inside of the wheel arc of the vehicle. This took place in Adelaide, Australia.



  • A farmer in Wisconsin woke up to tend to his pumpkins. He looked outside his tractor door and saw a kangaroo. This has not been the first time the farmer has spotted a kangaroo on his farm.



  • An 83 year old grandfather named Willard Burgess pushed a suspect that was being chased by police off of his roof in his home in La Puenta, CA. The suspect was running from police and was refusing their orders to come down.

Business

  • The Highland hotels will enjoy longer relief from business rates. Its hospitality businesses have faced massive increases in the first rates since 2010. With a 12.5 percent cap introduced in February to mitigate the increase.


  • The starting pay for a NASA astronaut job is pretty good depending on the person’s experience. America is gearing up for a new era human spaceflight. Space agency has astronauts with all sorts of backgrounds. 

  • Snapchat is trying to grow its original series on the app. Snapchat has its sights set on beauty and fashion content. Snapchat is now launching a fashion reality show, hosted by Kate Hudson celebrity stylist, just in time for fashion week

  • Mckinsey drawn into South Africa's sprawling corruption scandal. The list of global companies is turning into a vast graft scandal and it is growing fast. The scandal revolves in the wealthy Gupta family has already effected tech giant SAP.

  • Google is buying HTC's smartphone expertise for 1.1Billion. The deal is Google’s ability to build mobile hardware and joins two companies that are already working together on one of Google’s upcoming pixel phones.

  • Amazon is reviewing its website after it suggested bomb making items. It was bomb making ingredients that were bought together.

Trump

Trump bashes at Obama's legacy while risking his own. Trump and GOP lawmakers got the chance to get rid of Obama's signature achievements. He wants to get rid of Obamacare and the nuclear deal with Iran.

Robert Mueller has requested documents and information covering a range of events from Trump's Oval office meeting. Mueller's investigators are looking for documents and emails relating to the dismissal of security advisor Michael Flynn. The requests show that Mueller's investigation is focusing on the president’s own actions.

Trump calls North Korean president Kim Jong Un a “Rocket Man” in his speech before the United Nations. Trump first said the name “Rocket Man” on twitter over the weekend. Trump may be on the verge of marketing Kim Jong Un right out of power.

At the UN meeting Trump railed against the country’s leadership. He described the Iran deal as “the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into.” The Iranian delegation fiddle with a cellphone as Trump made this statement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted a tweet saying “In over 30 years in my experience with the UN, I never heard a bolder or more courages speech.”

US government wiretapped former Trump campaign chairmen Paul Manafort after the election. Investigators are concerned that that Manafort had encouraged the Russians to help with the campaign. Sources have however said that the evidence is not conclusive.

In Trumps UN speech he set sights on Iran, and North Korea. He encouraged other countries to follow him to stop there behaviors. He’s trying to get other countries work together say they will accomplish more this way.

Politics

The Supreme Court is poised to hear some arguments for next month’s travel ban case. This doesn’t mean the Trumps orders will come into reality. 

 Trump is thinking about shooting down North Korea’s missiles, even if they are not a direct threat to the United States. He is still undecided but vows to keep pressure on North Korea

3 Congressman were among a group of protesters arrested outside Trump Tower. They precipitated in a support for immigration.

House Speaker, Paul Ryan is urging congress to repeal Obamacare and put in the Graham-Cassidy system. He said it is, “our best, last chance to get repeal and replace, done.”

Rex Tillerson and the Iran’s Foreign Minister had their first meeting discussing the Iranian Nuclear deal. Rex Tillerson added “we did throw shoes at one another.”



The U.S has closed a combat outpost in Syria and Syrian rebels are blaming it on a deal between the U.S and Russia. The Secretary of Defense in the U.S is calling it fake and saying that they backed out because a regime of ground forces including Russian air were crossing the Euphrates River

Science

  • A prototype of a device that was developed by an international team of engineers can sift tiny particles called exosomes from blood samples without the need of sending it to the lab. Consequently, this will help both scientific research and medical practices.

  • End-of-life can't bot can help you with the difficult final decisions. A new virtual assistant can help people who are terminally ill feel less anxious about death and more ready to complete their last will and testament.

  • At the University of Houston, artificial "skin" gave a robotic hand a sense of touch. The skin is made of stretchable electronics that give the skin a sense of hot and cold.

  • Single stranded DNA robots can sort molecular cargoes. A scientist developed a simple algorithm for recognizing 2 types of molecular cargoes. The DNA robot can pick up the cargoes and drop them off in the destinations.

  • A new robot can hold onto sharks using section cups. The design for the robot was designed from a fish that suctions onto other fish and hitch a ride to get food.

  • Scientist predict a sixth mass extinction in 2100. Current rates of carbon emissions increases could trigger a sixth mass extinction by the year 2100. Extinction that killed most of the dinosaurs 65.5 million years ago.

National

  • Political commentator Scottie Nell Hughes has filed a lawsuit against Fox News. Alleging the network had retaliated against her for accusing Fox Business News Anchor Charles Payne of sexual assault and rape. In a suit filed on Monday in federal court in New York, Hughes says she had taken her accusations against Payne to Fox and law firm Paul Weiss. Which conducted internal investigations for Fox in the wake of a string of sexual harassment allegations



  • Hurricane Maria made landfall Monday night on the Caribbean island of Dominica as a category 5 storm. The National Hurricane Center said as other islands in the region, including Puerto Rico, brace for the impact, Maria made landfall on Dominica around 9:15pm local time with estimated winds of 150mph.



  • Ex-Chicago cop arrested on drug charges after 15 years on the run. Eddie Hicks, aged 68, was charged in 2001 with leading a group of corrupt officers who used fake search warrants to rob drug dealers. Authorities said his crew would keep the illicit money for themselves and then sell the drugs. It is told that he fled the night before his trial was set to begin in 2003 and was believed to have traveled to Brazil. Hicks worked on the Chicago Police Department for 29 years, spending most of his time as a narcotics officer. Authorities say Hicks and his men extorted drug dealers for nearly 10 years before one bust went wrong, leading to Hicks eventual arrest.



  • Teacher who asked students to justify KKK is suspended. A South Carolina teacher was placed on administrative leave Friday after including a question about the Ku Klux Klan in a homework assignment. The Lexington Richland School District Five teacher gave an assignment to fifth graders, who were asked “You are a member of the KKK, Why do you think your treatment of African Americans is justified?” Parents expressed shock on social media and elsewhere, the district responded Friday by placing the teacher who was not identified on leave.
