Early Ethnology Scrapbook AlaskaOversize item with Box 57. COLLECTED PAPERS BOX 58. Folder 1. Seward, William H. Letter dated July 17, 1822, Albany to John W. Francis, M.D. 1 p. (comments on medicine as an occupation). Folder 2. Weatherly, James. Diary. July 11-1901-July 15, 1902. 35 p. Typescript of diary with pencil notations starting at Harrisburg, Penn., where Mr. Weatherly enlisted in the the Army. On July 24 orders came assigning him to the Seventh U.S. Infantry in Alaska. He arrived at Fort Davis near Nome on Aug. 12, 1901 and at Fort St. Michael on Aug. 16. He describes travel and vessels on the Yukon River, account of daily activities, observations, mail service and names of various people. He worked on the military telegraph (WAMCATS) installation and discusses some of the work, checking poles, breaks in the line, getting news over the line, etc. Mentions his receipt on Feb. 19, 1902 of the ICY BLAST, the first newspaper published in Fort Gibbon. Diary mentions stations along the telegraph line, villages, prospectors, natives, etc. that pass through area. On June 11, 1902, Capt. French came to the post and took command.
The Alaska Council of the Parent-Teachers' Association sponsored the contest. An undated typescript copy of the poems includes the name of the poem and high school attended. Folder 4. File includes biographical sketch on Cone, "The Bard of the Kuskokwim." Folder 8. Kollm, Max W. THAT PHENOMENAL DISCOVERY: A KLONDIKE REMINISCENCE. Typescript with letter dated June 5, 1936. Folder 9. Journal [of] F. Matheson. Wrangell, Alaska. 1912-1919. 56 p. An accounts ledger. F. Matheson is listed as a department store, general merchant, forwarding agent, jeweler, photographer and news dealer (1915/16 POLK DIRECTORY). RUTH AND JACK ALLMAN FILE BOX 59. This series includes papers on the life and activities of the Allmans. Jack Allman, an Alaskan miner and pioneer, did extensive writing on Alaska and started THE MATANUSKA VALLEY PIONEER newspaper. He married Ruth Coffin, a Juneau school teacher in 1949, and they bought Tongass Lodge at Excursion Inlet. Active in the American Legion, the Kodiak post was renamed Jack Allman Post No. 17 following Jack's death in 1953. Ruth spent eight years caring for Grace Wickersham, until Grace's death in 1963. She also devoted much effort to perpetuating the memory and contributions of James Wickersham. These papers contain personal correspondence of the Allmans including three folders with letters, photos, clippings, etc. regarding Major Robert M. Crawford, the Alaskan composer who wrote the official Air Force Song. There are letters regarding patent and marketing of Jack Allman's fishing lure "Silversides," and some of Ruth's correspondence about copyright of Wickersham's writings. Ruth's House of Wickersham and sourdough related activities are included in this file. Correspondence and material concerning Ruth's direct efforts and participation in Wickersham commemorative activity and care of Grace are in the family/personal files (Box 46). Folder 1. As Wickersham sometimes grouped his correspondence, the date of the top letter is used; therefore, other letters and documents in the group may be out of sequence. As Wickersham often interfiled other documents or clippings with his correspondence some groups may contain these documents. Subject files also contain correspondence.
