MW50S10A

Multi-way Switch

www.electronics.taewoolimited.com

OVERVIEW
The MW50S10A is a disruptive construction solution for controlling a bank of lights from up to 50 locations. With its simplified wiring, this makes applications in a long corridor, walkway, multistorey stair wells in high rise buildings and large meeting locals with many exits a breeze.

The MW50S10A features:

  • separate 110/220V AC 10A lighting and 12V DC switching circuits, thereby simplify the wiring.

  • up to 50 flexible switching locations using our SWA001 2-way switch adapter or more than 50 locations using a standard (NO) push-button arrangement – ideal for multi-landing stairwells.

  • selectable (5, 10, 15 or 20 minutes) light-out time

  • selectable timed or continuous lighting.

  • switches can be combined or strict push-button (NO) types or adapted 2-way switches (requires our SWA001 adapter circuits).

INSTALLATION

Test: If you want to get familiar with the wiring and features of the MW50S10A before you deploy in a live circuit, please follow the steps in the next skectch and explanations.

A simple power connection as shown is all that is required to test all the functions of the MW50S10A (the function LED gives the status of the light bank/the TEST button emulates the switch circuit):

  • Connect the L and N pins to live 110V AC or 220V AC. The inner LED lights confirming that power gets to the unit.

  • Press the TEST pushbutton & release, the light bank (function LED) is switched ON.

  • Press the TEST pushbutton & release, the light bank (function LED) is switched OFF.

Switch the Timer Select to Timer ON, push inward only the 5 mins micro-switch:

  • Press the TEST pushbutton & release, monitor with a timepiece that the light (function LED) automatically switches off at the end of about 5 minutes.

DEPLOYMENT

The MW50S10A is conceived to be clipped onto a 100mm length of standard DIN rail itself either mounted on a wall or in a junction box at an appropriate location where the feeder, the switch and the light circuits all meet. For ease of settings adjustments, the wall-mounted option might be preferable.

Prior to connecting the MW50S10A,

  • the light circuit should be completed but only the Earth conductor is connected to the distribution board (the Earth conductor is not required by the MW50S10A).

  • the Neutral and the MCB protected Live feeder from the distribution board should be available.

  • If pushbutton switching option is planned, then draw 2 x 1mm2 conductors from switch locations to switch locations leaving enough loop for later connection to the pushbutton switch plates.

  • If the 2-way switching option is planned, then draw 3 x 1mm2 conductors (colour coded) from switch locations to switch locations leaving enough loop for later connection to the SWA001’s mounted on the standard 2-way switch plates.

  • The length of the wiring between the first and the last switch should not exceed 100m for switching reliability.

Following the above-listed preliminaries, the MW50S10A installation can be completed in the following two steps:

  • Light circuit, leave the switch circuit wires to the MW50S10A unconnected at this stage:

. switch off the supply MCB to the feeder circuit.
. connect the feeder live to MW50S10A’s connector marked POWER L
. connect the feeder neutral to MW50S10A’s connector marked POWER N
. connect the lighting circuit live wire to MW50S10A’s connector marked LIGHT L
. connect the lighting circuit neutral wire to the MW50S10A’s connector marked POWER N. This completes the lighting circuitry.
. switch ON the MCB to the circuit.
. press the TEST button & release. The bank of light should light up. If not, then check that power gets to the MW50S10A.
. press the TEST button again and release. The bank of light should turn off. Each alternate press on the TEST button should switch the lights ON and OFF.
. this completes the lighting circuit. Switch off the MCB power to the MW50S10A.

  • Switch circuit - pushbutton arrangement via the 2x1mm2 switch to switch wiring.

. connect a pushbutton switch plate one conductor to one connector.
. at the MW50S10A, connect one wire to STR and the other to the + terminal.
. switch ON the MCB to the circuit.
. press and release the pushbutton, the light bank should change state at each press.
. this completes the pushbutton arrangement, continue to wire and connect the number of pushbutton switch plates for the number of switch locations desired.

  • Switch circuit – adapted 2-way switch arrangement.

. pull 3 x 1mm2 conductors, preferably colour-coded, to the nearest switch location.
. mount a SWA001 unto a standard 2-way switch plate, black or blue to the 0V, red or brown to 12V and the third conductor to the STR pin of the connector on the SWA001 printed circuit board.
. at the MW50S10A, connect the black or blue to the -, red or brown to + and the third conductor to the STR pin of the switch terminal.
. switch ON the MCB to the circuit.
. throw the 2-way switch either way, the light bank should change state at each switch throw.
. this completes the 2-way switch arrangement, continue to wire and connect the number of 2-way switch plates mounted each with a SWA100 for the number of switch locations desired.

Refer to the schematics shown below for both switching arrangements.

Troubleshooting
In the rare situations when things do not go as expected, the status of the inner power LED and the operation LED will reveal most troubles and hence what to look for:

Trouble

Checks

Interventions

Switch operated but no light

  1. Check internal LED of MW50S10A

    1. If internal LED off, go to step 3

    2. If internal LED on, continue to step 2

  2. Check test button.

    1. If light bank switches on & off on alternate press, then light circuit is OK

    2. Need to check switch connections to the MW50S10A (-, STR & +). Ensure that all are securedly fixed.

  3. Check MCB on DB.

    1. Check the presence of single-phase AC voltage at the power-in terminals.

    2. Check connections at the power input terminals of the MW50S10A.

    3. If connections are good, there is power at the terminals and the light bank still does not light up, then check step 4.

  4. Check internal fuse.

    1. The MW50S10A has an internal fuse that ONLY rarely needs to be checked.

    2. When steps 1 to 3 failed to resolve the trouble.

    3. Switch off the MCB feeding the MW50S10A.

    4. Use a terminal screwdriver to peer open the MW50S10A enclosure.

    5. Check and if need be, replace the internal fuse.

If internal LED lit,
