Workbook to accompany Tonal Harmony, 5th ed.
Staff paper
Course Description

A continuation of Theory II with an emphasis on the critical study and analysis of the chromatic harmony and formal structure of 18th and 19th century music. Creative work in traditional compositional forms gives the student “hands-on” practice.

Course Objectives

The student will study various elements of chromaticism (mode mixture, the Neapolitan chord, augmented sixth chords, enharmonic spellings and modulations) as well as compositional forms and techniques (two-voice counterpoint, fugue, variation).

Course Outline

In this class we will work through chapters 21-25 of the text. You will be expected to prepare for class by reading that portion of the text which will be discussed during the class period. Written assignments will be taken from the workbook and occasionally from outside sources. These assignments will be handed in at the BEGINNING OF CLASS or graded during class. No work will be accepted late. If you are absent and have a doctor’s excuse, you are to get your assignment to me by the end of the day in which the assignment is due. In order to insure that the material is being assimilated, frequent pop quizzes will be given over material covered in previous class meetings. Please Note: No quizzes will be made up. Missed quizzes will be figured into the student’s daily average as a 0 (zero). Students who have a doctors excuse will not be penalized.
