2.4 DATABASE
Saminu (2008) these are large amount of data that are stored in the computer so that they can easily be accessed by the system. These data are put in structured form called tables by the database. The tables are arranged in a specific order, in columns and in a row that corresponds to fields and records respectively and can also exhibit relationship.
2.4.1 Types of Database
There are many different kinds of databases, designed to perform different functions. The most commonly encountered ones are:-

  1. Production database

  2. Decision support database

2.4.2 Production Database
This is the most common database which is transaction intensive i.e. its use is being characterized by frequent and complex transaction.
A transaction is a logical unit of work that reads or writes from a database which may involve either a single action or multiple actions. For example, whenever you make a purchase, enroll in a college, apply for drives license, you encounter a production database.

2.4.3 Decision Support Database
Information is a data that has been processed and is the core for any decision making process. Therefore the decision support system (DSS) database focuses on information requirements rather than transaction requirements which characterize the production database. The most common DSS database is known as the data warehouse. As the name implies, the data warehouse is a data storage facility that uses the existing data generate information.

It relies on data extraction and loading rather than transaction to generate the stored data within them. Most of the extracted data is from production databases; therefore, production database design is important to the data warehouse database.

Corruption of the production database due to poor design, bad transaction will be reflected in the data warehouses data.
