Nationwide Gears Up for Second Half of

2005 NASCAR Season
COLUMBUS, OHIO (July 11, 2005) - Nationwide’s catchphrase, “Life Comes At You Fast”, is completely befitting of the company’s partnership with Speedway Motorsports Inc. (SMI), and NASCAR. As one of the largest insurance and financial services companies in the business enters the second half of its six-year involvement in one of the fastest growing sports in the world, it has plenty to boast about.
Through unique, customer-focused programs at 11 events across the six race tracks owned and operated by SMI: Atlanta Motor Speedway; Bristol Motor Speedway; Las Vegas Motor Speedway; Lowe’s Motor Speedway; Texas Motor Speedway; and Infineon Raceway (CA), Nationwide has aligned itself with the most brand loyal customers on the planet – NASCAR fans.

Nationwide has hit the fast lane by providing free transportation to more than 400,000 race fans around the SMI speedway properties. A fleet of 26 golf carts, including handicapped carts, make up the Nationwide Fan Assistance Patrol. Local individuals and civic organizations volunteer their time and driving skills to focus their efforts on assisting the elderly, families with children, and the physically challenged fans around the tracks.

Nationwide’s sponsorship of Speedway Trams has increased the number of fans shuttled around on the speedway grounds by the thousands. Their sponsorship of both of these modes of transportation was the first of its kind at NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series events.
Just as important to Nationwide is its sponsorship of the Safe Driving Move of the Race Award for NEXTEL Cup Series events at the SMI tracks. Long known for its contributions to charitable organizations, this program was designed for Nationwide as a means to allow for a donation to be made by Nationwide, in a NEXTEL Cup driver’s name, to Speedway Children’s Charities.

The Safe Driving Move of the Race Award is presented to the driver whose actions most notably demonstrate safety during the NEXTEL Cup events at each of the six SMI tracks. Recipients are nominated by Performance Racing Network (PRN) announcers covering the race, and the recipient is presented with a check during pre-race ceremonies at the following SMI event. Jeff Gordon, Travis Kvapil, Sterling Marlin, Dave Blaney, Jimmie Johnson, and Mike Wallace are just a few of the recipients who have received the award so far in 2005.
Greg Biffle was the latest recipient of the award for his efforts during the Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway in June. The 2001 NASCAR Busch Series champion will be presented with a check during driver introductions for the Sharpie 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway on August 27. To date, Nationwide has contributed more than $60,000 to the Speedway Children’s Charities through its sponsorship of this award program.
Every day, Nationwide is ready to assist customers when it’s needed. As the sponsor of SMI’s Safety Vehicles and Jet Dryers, Nationwide is proud to be there for the drivers and crews as well. On the high banked, half-mile oval of the famed Bristol Motor Speedway – where tempers flare and cautions prevail – you’re likely to see the Nationwide Safety Vehicles complete more laps than some of the competitors!
NASCAR racing fans have gone interactive at Nationwide’s new Outdoor Performance Tour Display rig. Early this year, the 80 year old company launched a strategy to market its special lines products – boating, motorcycles, all terrain vehicles (ATVs) and recreational vehicles (RVs) – trying to become more highly affiliated with consumers who prioritize outdoor lifestyle activities. A colorful, graphically wrapped truck and trailer transports a sport fishing simulator and two Yamaha Wave Runners that will be given away as part of a sweepstakes to drive lead generation.
The Nationwide Outdoor Performance Tour Display will be in operation at NASCAR events in Bristol, Charlotte, Atlanta, and Texas. While visiting the display, race fans can also enter the SMI Super Six Sweepstakes to win a VIP trip for two to a NEXTEL Cup event in 2006. During the Coca Cola 600 weekend alone, 4,800 entries were gathered during a three-day stint at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

One of the biggest perks of Nationwide’s partnership with SMI is the ability to entertain employees, agents, and customers at unique hospitality and suite events across the country. Used as a sales pay-off or promotional tool, guests are treated to a VIP NASCAR weekend they will not soon forget. Many ‘first-timers’ are veteran race fans when they leave the speedways at the end of the day.
“I am excited about Nationwide’s continued involvement with SMI and NASCAR racing”, said Dawn Morris, Special Events Consultant, Nationwide Tour/NASCAR. “I have made it my personal goal to take this sponsorship to a new level and provide VIP treatment to our guests and fans at each event. Our program is based on customer service and we are proud to have an opportunity to be a part of this great sport.”
After a short summer break, Nationwide motorsports is getting geared up for its next event, the Sharpie 500, at the world-famous, half-mile oval at Bristol Motor Speedway on August 27. The race will be broadcast, under the lights, on TNT starting at 7:00 p.m. EST. Don’t miss it!
