7.03 Reptiles & Amphibians
The number of native reptilian and amphibian species is said to be quite high considering the northern climate of the region. Since these animals are cold-blooded, they must spend relatively large portions of the year in a dormant state when air temperatures are too low to warm their bodies.
Of the fifty-five (55) native species occurring in the Pinelands region, twenty-nine (29) are considered common and nine (9) are listed as threatened or endangered within the State. The thirty (30) species which were selected for study by the Pinelands Commission consultants were chosen because of their distribution patterns or known declining populations.
