Last release in the “From The Earth To The Spheres” split series set up by Maurizio and Roberto Opalio aka My Cat Is An Alien on their own Opax Records imprint, sees the Italian cosmic duo splitting the media with well-known audio visual artist, performer and turntable-art innovator Christian Marclay together with cello improviser Okkyung Lee, ubiquitous figure of downtown NY avant-garde scene. Their track "Rubbings" is the result of a live performance recorded at Tonic NYC in December 2003. Christian Marclay's trademarked technique of mixing several ranges of Lps on his multiple turntables, manipulating, fragmenting and altering the phonograph records' sonic nature in accordance with his "theater of found sound" esthetics meets the uncompromising and passionate playing of Korean-born performer Lee, whose powerful cello's stabs interact with Marclay's waves of screaming sounds creating a unique, stunning scenario. My Cat Is An Alien's piece "Beyond the limits of the stars/ Beyond the limits of the grooves" was recorded in 2003 at their Space Room studio in Torino, and has been kept safely in their archive 'till September 2005, when it's been completely remixed and edited appositely for this release. One of their heaviest conceptions to date, the piece is built on electric guitars' strings moaning onto walls of space drones and electronics like ectoplasmic presences emerging from the brillliance of the Void. The initial minimal and claustrophobic guitar chords become more and more an ocean of howling moduled feedbacks combined with fragmented and distorted real-time inserts of post-romantic classical music from old 78rpm shellac records, sounding like radio frequencies transmitted via ether from the furthest reaches of the Cosmos. As the title suggests, MCIAA's need of a non-finite "space music & art" aesthetics research has led them to etch a ghost track (instead of the final lock-groove you can find on the original vinyl) to un-seal the sounds from their actual support; a purpose expressed throughout the whole "From the earth to the Spheres" series' conception. It is a special release in Meelkop's catalogue because it is consist of five piece that were originally used in the context of sound installations running over a certain period of time in specific special surroundings. For 5(zwischenfaelle) Meelkop has set himself the task to compress these soundscapes into five dense and still minimal audio pieces that could work outside the context of the original installations. 5(zwischenfaelle) is focussed on single sound events and stark beautiful dynamic movements in a certain area of sound and does not have the bruitistic research-like feel of other solo works by Meelkop. 5(zwischenfaelle) makes for concentrated unpolished ultra minimal listening with maximum effect. Eu 5,90 -MUSLIMGAUZE VS. SPECIES OF FISHES "Muslimgauze Vs. Species Of Fishes" CD (Tourette) Bryn took two different albums of Species of Fishes to create this album. Because this is a remix, we get some different sounds than usual for a Muslimgauze release, which is nice! There are still occasional Arabic voices, and overall this release has a pleasant sound to it overall, not as 'challenging' as some Muslimgauze can be, but there are still spots that make you take hold, like, wow, what an ear piercing first song! This looped whistle gets into your head and makes the world a different place. Dubby sounds on track 2 with the trademark dropouts of Muslimgauze. There are other tracks with sharp sounds, but they aren't distorted like on some other releases -just the sharp without the static. This is a cool release for Muslimgauze. Some are take it or leave it, but this one is worth hearing. Digi-CD. They retrieve parts of mid 90's live electronics sessions, adding new recordings, and editing and 're-animating' that old tape recorded matter, here-hence 'Necrophonie' name: for the act of giving new electronic life to 'dead audio recordings'. But the necrophiliac suggestion is just a fleeting feeling, since these compositions ground on serious thoughts about electronic noise: “The noise is not the negation of the grammar forms, rather than an otherwise unspeakable assertion of the language. Indeed only the noise unveils the mere semantics value of the musical game. Nocturne also uses a lot of samples in french language and even more sirenes, saws, metal-hammerings and more machine sounds, what gives "Fleisch und Metall" the grade of a 100% pure Industrial album”. Eu 13,00 -Ô PARADIS "Pequeñas Canciones De Amor" CD (Tourette)...Traditional Spanish instrumentation is enhanced with subtle electronic touches, making for a paradoxical yet progressive listening experience. "We are happy or perhaps already we are dead" is the by-line of Barcelona's Ô Paradis. "Pequeñas Canciones De Amor" has a little bit of retro, a little bit of world music, a touch of religious fervor, and a whole lot of pure laidback fun. The band's sound is curiously hard to classify - elements of "glam", industrial, and indie are all there, but there is something both blindly jovial and yet slightly apocalyptic about this album.
