As a referee, here are some tips to help you.

  1. Check “my games” each Friday night after 9 pm and print off your schedule

  1. Enter info your smart phone the address location of all the parks you work at

  1. Communication. We use email daily and only text time on game day.

  1. If  you are going to be late or unable to fulfill your referee assignment(s); communicate to me 1 hour ahead of game time via TEXT to my cell # 770-361-2921.

  1. A referee should be at the field 30 minutes prior to game time, dressed and ready to go.  This allows you enough time to sign in with the supervisors or field marshall, get to your assigned field, check in teams, check the field, goals etc.; and start the game on time. For additioalon the job training, we use referee mentors at AFU who will help you put what you learned in class into application on the field.

  1. Always bring lots of water and snacks/lunch with you. The concessions stand should be open and water provided, but you never want to be without water especially.   Hydrate---start drinking extra water from Thursday before your games on Saturday. Bananas are great to prevent leg cramps.

  1. If you play soccer, always allow extra time to get from/to your game to referee. You want to make sure you have enough time to change uniforms and arrive on time. Refer to #3 above.

  1. Remember -- referees are human. We make mistakes. The important thing is to learn and grown from them. Do not let coaches, players or parents bother you. You took the referee class, you passed; learn the rules and do your best. Let the supervisor on sight know if you have any issues.

  1. Referee Kits are available at many local soccer stores.  One of these is located at the corner of Buford Hwy and Pleasant Hill Road in Duluth. Their kit should include the following items: 1 yellow jersey, 1 black shorts, 1 black set of socks, 1 set of flags, 1 set of cards (red and yellow), 1 black bi-fold, 1 set of game reports, 1 whistle, 1 black ref bag, 1 lanyard, 1 velcro patch for about $65.00.  I recommend purchasing 1 pair back turf shoes,1 black t-shirt (only thing allowed under ref jersey), 2nd pair of ref socks and 1 additional economy ref jersey in either green, red, blue or black.  As you progress as a referee, you should add the other jersey's to your kit. All of these expenses including your referee course are tax deductions so keep your receipts.

If you have any problems joining my referee group, entering your availability in the calendar, or have any questions not answered above; please email or call me.

I look forward to working with you this season.
