AB - ABSTRACT: Recent studies have revealed that the rich fresh-water vertebrate fossil fauna of the Urumaco Formation in northwestern Falcon, of Late Miocene age, belongs biogeographically to the Orinoco River system. This finding, together with other evidence, can be used to chart the changing course of the Orinoco River during the Neogene and thus date the uplift of various mountain ranges that affected the change in this course. Presence of the Misoa delta in the Middle Eocene of the Maracaibo Basin has been suggested as evidence for a large river, running in a south-north direction and draining the Central Cordillera of Colombia and the Guayana Highlands. The late Middle Eocene uplifting of Western Venezuela changed the paleogeographic setting, and a new delta-building shifted to the south, represented by the extensive Carbonera Formation of Late Eocene to Oligocene age in the Llanos Basin of Colombia and Southwestern Venezuela. In the earliest Miocene, the Falcon Basin, situated to the east of the Maracaibo Basin, was primarily the site of marine shale sedimentation. Stratigraphic and microfaunal evidence suggests the possibility of the presence of the proto-Orinoco River in the western margin of the basin. In any case, from the mid Early Miocene until the end of the Middle Miocene, a fluvio-deltaic sequence was deposited in the northwestern Falcon, with a total thickness of 4.7km. The Urumaco Formation overlies this sequence and its vertebrate fauna indicates that the river which built the prior delta was definitely the proto-Orinoco. The deformation and uplift of the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia and of the southwestern end of the Merida Andes caused the distal course of the river to be deflected to a west-east direction. A late Middle Miocene age for this change of course is precisely dated on marine microfaunal evidence. The Late Miocene sedimentary record of the Orinoco River delta appears east of Maturin, in the Eastern Venezuela Basin, and Pliocene and Pleistocene deltaic sediments are especially evident in Trinidad and the Columbus Basin.

AB - ABSTRACT: A series of seismic reflection profiles allow to document the styles, timing and relevant characteristics to the petroleum systems associated with the folded-belts along northern South America. These mountain systems are responsible for the partial destruction of the thin Cretaceous Atlantic type passive margin, and as the northern source of sediments for the Tertiary Venezuelan foredeeps. The passive margin is only preserved at the far-East limit of the Eastern Venezuela Basin, East of the Orinoco Delta. This margin became progressively deformed to the West, where a Neogene segment of a thin-skin south-vergent folded-belt is reported as the Eastern Serrania del Interior, which is in turn coupled to the evolution of the Maturin Foredeep. Westwardly, the Late Paleogene-Early Neogene Guarico Foredeep is tied to the emplacement of a basement involved folded belt, the Western Serrania del Interior. West of the El Baul High, a two stage folded belt is coupled to the Barinas Foredeep. A first phase corresponds to the Eocene south vergent Lara Nappes, and a satellite Foredeep due to the north-vergent emplacement of the basement involved Late Neogene Merida Andes. Farther West, the Apure-Llanos sub-basin is developed from an Early Paleogene basement involved folded-belt, modified to its present configuration by a Neogene reactivation of the east-vergent Eastern Cordillera of Colombia. These folded-belts have unique conditions defining the petroleum systems but always had been related to the Late Cretaceous source rocks.

AB - ABSTRACT: The East Falcon Basin has been described persistently in the context of the Maracaibo Basin tectonic framework. It is the objective of the present study to demonstrate that the Falcon Basin is, in effect, a Caribbean Basin juxtaposed on South America and affected by Caribbean tectonics. The oldest rocks outcropping in the region are Late Paleozoic metamorphic and igneous rocks rafted from northcentral Colombia, Middle Jurassic ophiolite complexes, sediments and metasediments and Cretaceous ophiolites transported by a melange of late Cretaceous to early Tertiary sediments. The south vergence of the Caribbean Nappe province has been documented and extends to the present limit of the Andean uplift and to the southern limit of the Coastal Range. The migrating foredeep that developed during the Paleocene/Eocene deposited dominantly basinal shales and thin sandstones. During the Oligocene the Caribbean faults of the Oca system and conjugates began with a dominantly transtensional regime becoming progressively transpressional by Miocene time. The facies development of the Oligocene-Miocene document the tectonic history. Unique blocks remained as resistant blocks creating ramparts and modifying the basin configuration. During transpression northward verging thrusting progressively migrated towards the present coastline. The most evident structures of the region are Caribbean in affinity and combined with the sedimentary history of the region can serve to unravel the complex Caribbean-South American plate interaction.

AB - ABSTRACT: The sinistral Bramon-Bucaramanga shear zone, in conjunction with the southeastern vergent Falla Borde Llanero and the northwestern vergent frontal thrust of the Merida Andes, define a complex area were tectonic transport shows crustal scale shift. Palinspastic restorations have been used as a base for the identification and reconstruction of the evolving petroleum systems, showing that several of the discontinuities within this collage served as barriers for major oil accumulations. The main oil generating unit of the region is a 200 m thick sequence of Cenomanian-Turonian rocks representing a variety of facies, from siliciclastic mudstones to finely laminated limestones. Sequence stratigraphy at well-log scale combined with seismic profiles have helped to identify and map the most important reservoir-seal couples within Late Cretaceous and late Eocene-Early Miocene megasequences. One and two-dimensional modelling of kerogen maturation suggest a major phase of oil expulsion during Early Miocene. Loading of the source rock below Upper Miocene to Holocene thrust and/or coeval foredeep sediments has developed a petroleum system that is active today. Oil migrated toward the local highs from active kitchens located to the west-southwest.

AB - ABSTRACT: Nine megasequences have been recognized and related to major basin forming processes: (1) 202-142 m y: first rifting event; (2) 128-111 m y: second rifting event; (3) 111-75 m y: thermal subsidence; (4) 75-65 my: transition from thermal to flexural subsidence; (5) 65-50 m y: flexural subsidence in the southwest related to the final accretion of the Western Cordillera of Colombia; (6) 50-39 m y: flexural subsidence in the north-northwest associated to the emplacement of the Lara nappes; (7) 39-15 m y: two megasequences, separated by a Middle Miocene unconformity, deposited in a flexural setting resulting from thrusting and uplift in the Western and Central Cordilleras of Colombia and the Perija range; (8) 15-O m y: latest phase of foreland development resulting from inversion and uplift along the Merida Andes. The well known Cenomanian-Turonian source rock is involved in most of the mountain building process. Thermal modelling suggests at least two major events of oil generation and migration. The first one took place between late Middle Eocene and Oligocene, coeval to the emplacement of the Lara nappes. A second pulse started during the Miocene, as a result of thrusting and uplift of the Merida Andes.
