AB - ABSTRACT: Incised valley fills in the late Eocene Mirador Formation of the Cusiana Field are dominated by quartz arenite sandstones that vary in grain size from fine sandstones to sandy conglomerates. The average porosity of the valley sandstones is approximately 8% which reflects significant compaction during deep burial ( approximately 20,000 feet) and abundant quartz cement ( approximately 14%) precipitated over a wide temperature range (85-140 degrees C). Surprisingly, the present permeability structure of the valley fill sandstones still reflects grain size variations. Indeed, the effect of the large amounts of quartz cement has been to exaggerate the primary textural variation in permeability. Very coarse, well sorted sandstones at the valley bases possess two orders of magnitude higher permeability than fine-grained equivalents of the same porosity. This permeability contrast is more than original depositional textures in sandstones would predict and is consistent with predictions from simple sphere pack models which show that at low porosity (<12%), the contrast in permeability due to grain size is greatly enhanced. As a result the reservoir characterization has been based on the primary sedimentary fabric, not on diagenesis. Production logging results show that the coarse grained bases of the valley fills are indeed the major contributors to flow. Thus the impact of diagenesis on the flow structure of these valley fills has been to selectively reduce the permeability of finer-grained sandstones, while maintaining high permeability in the coarsest grained bases of the valley fills.

AB - ABSTRACT: Much of our understanding of the earth is from the study of surface geology and seismic, but many surface structures are responses to deformation which occurred below sedimentary layers. The practice within the petroleum industry is to use top-down processes of analyzing the surface to understand the subsurface, and observed surface structural styles tend to influence seismic interpretations. Yet many conditions which influenced the structural styles seen at the surface are different at depth. Since seismic is a time representation of the earth, many interpretation pitfalls may exist within areas of complex geology. Also, its reliability decreases with depth and with increasing geologic complexity. Forward modeling and pre-stack depth migration technologies are used to provide true depth images of the seismic data. Even with these advances in seismic imaging technology, the interpreter needs to incorporate additional data into the interpretation. Accurate structural identification requires the interpreter to integrate seismic with surface geology, remote sensing, gravity, magnetic data, geochemistry, fault-plane solutions from earthquakes, and regional tectonic studies. Incorporating these types of data into the interpretation will help us learn how basement is involved in the deformation of overlying sediments. A study of the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia shows the deformation to be dominantly transpressional in style. Euler deconvolution of the aeromagnetic data shows a highly fractured basement, steep fault lineaments, en echelon structures, and complex fault patterns, all of which would be typical of wrench-type deformation. Available surface geology, regional studies, earthquake data, and forward modeling support this interpretation.

AB - ABSTRACT: Palynological and lithofacies data from seven stratigraphic sections from the late Quaternary and Cretaceous of Colombia, and the late Paleogene of the U. S. Gulf Coast have been used to reconstruct paleobathymetric and relative sea level curves. Our palynological methodology consists of two major components: a palynofacies analysis and a paleoecological interpretation of dinoflagellates, pollen and spores assemblages. A minimum of 300 organic matter particles are counted in each sample recording their composition, size of longest axis, sorting and level of degradation. A statistical treatment of the recorded data, such as lognormal distribution, cluster and principal component analysis was conducted. Under the assumption of a dominance of allocyclic processes, the clustered samples are ordered according to their organic matter content, which indicate their positions relative to the paleoshoreline. Dinoflagellates, pollen and spores taxa are clustered according to minimum variance cluster and similarity indexes. The paleoecological meaning of each group is interpreted based on the current literature. When correlating several sections, cluster from every section are compared with each other to obtain palecological associations that mainly reflect a position relative to the shoreline. The final reconstruction of relative paleobathymetric curves is based on the integration of lithofacies, paleoecology and palynofacies data. This technique is useful in Carboniferous to Recent rocks and sediments from continental or marine origin.
