AB - ABSTRACT: Postcranial rhizodontid remains from Middle Paddock (central Queensland, mid-Visean) show closest affinity to those of Strepsodus, known from the Carboniferous of Britain and eastern Canada, latest Devonian of Turkey and Upper Devonian of Colombia and Iran. The Queensland Strepsodus marks the appearance of the Rhizodontidae (a derived taxon within the Rhizodontida including Strepsodus, Rhizodus and Screbodinus) in East Gondwana; tetrapod, xenacanth and lungfish taxa from Middle Paddock also include groups not previously described from East Gondwana. This is a contribution to IGCP 421.

AB - ABSTRACT: Some osteological characters of Tselfatia formosa are revised. They confirm that Tselfatia belongs to the Tselfatiiformes or Bananogmiiformes. The phylogenetic relationships of this order are studied. The Tselfatiiformes are primitive Clupeocephala. They appear apomorphic in regard to the Crossognathiformes and represent the plesiomorphic sister-group of a clade including the Otocephala (Clupeomorpha and Ostariophysi) and the Euteleostei.

AB - ABSTRACT: Eastern Washington has undergone a long and complicated tectonic history that is still not completely understood. These events include the deposition of the Precambrian Belt Supergroup in some type of sedimentary basin, late Precambrian passive margin sedimentation (Windermere Group), formation of the Mesozoic Kootenay Arc in northeast Washington, addition of an island arc (Quesnellia) in north-central Washington in middle Mesozoic, thrusting in the late Cretaceous, development of Eocene metamorphic core complexes and the Miocene eruption of the Columbia River Plateau basalts. The deep crustal structure of the rocks forming the above events are only know in general terms and their location are unknown beneath the Columbia River Plateau basalts, which cover most of eastern Washington. To aid in determining the crustal structure of eastern Washington and particularly beneath the Colombia River Plateau basalts, a detailed gravity survey was conducted. Approximately 800 new gravity stations were collected between Spokane and Colfax, Washington. These data were merged with the sparse existing data, gridded and contoured to produce complete Bouguer gravity anomaly map. The additional data helps delineate a southern boundary for the Hauser Lake gneiss and the potential northeast extension of the St. Joe fault. Two-dimensional crustal structure models will be constructed that will aid in determining the location of the Precambrian cratonic boundary underneath the Columbia River Plateau basalts and the possible western extent of Belt Basin sediments.

AB - ABSTRACT: The sensitivity of the hydrological cycle to soil water-holding capacity (WHC) is investigated using the Laboratoire de Meteorologie Dynamique General Circulation Model (LMD GCM) coupled to a land surface model (LSM). A reference simulation (REF), with WHCs equal to 150 mm globally (except in deserts where it is set to 30 mm), is compared to two perturbation simulations using datasets with realistic WHC distributions: the "available WHC" (AWC) dataset is physically consistent with the definition of WHC in the LSM and has a global average close to 150 mm; the "total WHC" (TWC) dataset is used as a secondary reference for a large WHC increase (more than a doubling from 150 mm). The average impact over land of the increase in WHC (from REF to both AWC and TWC) is an increase in annual mean evaporation, split between increased annual precipitation and decreased annual mean moisture convergence. The regional responses, however, are more complex: precipitation increases in summer over the midlatitude landmasses through the recycling of increased evaporation; in the Tropics, moisture convergence and precipitation decrease in the intertropical convergence zone and precipitation increases in the surrounding areas, both behaviors being related to the sensitivity of tropical convection to surface energy fluxes in the LMD GCM. Two important conclusions arise from these numerical results: first, the changes in the hydrological cycle are driven through evaporation by the WHC changes realized in the hydrologically active regions (continental midlatitude and tropical rainbelts); second, WHC increase of 10% to 20% in the rainbelts induces changes in the hydrologic cycle with similar patterns and almost the same amplitude as changes resulting from an increase greater than 100%. These results are strongly conditioned to the land-atmosphere feedbacks, which can only be allowed in a GCM environment.

AB - ABSTRACT: A detailed geochemical study and a sequence stratigraphic interpretation have been conducted on a sedimentary sequence of the Upper Cretaceous La Luna Formation, in a section outcropping in the eastern flank of the Middle Magdalena Basin (MMB), Colombia. The goals were to evaluate geochemical variability related to lithofacies and organic facies changes, characterize depositional environment and investigate the possible relationship between geochemical data and sequence stratigraphic cycles. The La Luna Formation is composed of organic-rich sediments of monotonous appearance, with good to excellent potential for oil generation. Most of the bulk, petrographic and biomarker parameters display a relatively narrow range of variation. However, the geochemical variations are sufficient to differentiate organic facies types B, BC and C in the Salada Member, B and D in the Pujamana Member and B in the Galembo Member. Certain biomarker ratios are consistent within the La Luna Formation and are characteristic of its depositional environment, for example, average ratios of diasterane/sterane are lower than 1, Ts/Tm averages are less than 0.33, the C (sub 35) /C (sub 34) hopane ratio is more than 0.92, and oleanane/C (sub 30) hopane ratios range from 0.02 to 0.19. Regarding depositional condition indicators, the C (sub 35) /C (sub 34) hopane ratio shows a good positive correlation with HI. This suggests that in carbonate environment changes in this parameter are more strongly related to redox condition than to changes in carbonate content. Regarding the possible relationship between organic matter characteristics and sea level changes, in regressive carbonate shelves during shallow stages, HI tends to increase and TOC tends to decrease, while in regressive siliciclastic shelves, both TOC and HI decrease continuously. Some biomarker ratios (oleanane/C (sub 30) hopane, C (sub 20) /C (sub 23) tricyclic, Ts/Tm) increase during base level falls. Regarding delta (super 13) C/ (super 12) C isotope composition, the aromatic fraction and whole bitumen display an isotopic shift associated to the main deepening event in the section.
