AB - ABSTRACT: The GP Radar system is a powerful geophysical tool that has many applications every day within the geosciences. For some years, the glaciology has been using this technique to define contacts ice-rock in different glacial masses of the world. Two examples of its application in South America for defining of thicknesses of ice on snow-covered volcanoes have been implemented for intentions of hazards maps and paleo-clime studies on volcanic zones. The first case makes reference to 2567 m of linea profile on four glacier basins of the Nevado del Ruiz Volcano (Colombia); these registries allowed establishment of a preliminary definition of the rocky layer morphology, where the maximum thickness of glacier (190 m) is located on the Nereidas glacier (5240 m). The analysis of these profiles allowed in addition, the identification of one hidden volcanic structure interpreted as a crater located in the zone of the Nereidas Glacier in the direction of the Arenas Crater. The second case allows reference to the present glacial masses in the frame of forward and backward movement glacier studies in Antizana Volcano (Ecuador), for intentions of understand the dynamics of "El Nino" 10,000 years ago.

AB - ABSTRACT: Application of satellite geodesy in CASA surveys of 1991, 1994 and 1996, and stress inversion analysis of 96 focal mechanisms for 1976-2000 obtained by Harvard University (Mw>5), allowed establishment of a compressive tendency in the west-east sense of the Panama-Costa Rica Block (BPC), that collides with the North Andes Block (BNA). Nevertheless, some seismic evidence would allow to confirm the existence of the proposed Choco Block (BC), with western limit already in Darien Range, and eastern limit in the Murindo zone, demonstrated by the stress inversion of these two zones, with sub-parallel tendency north-south. The southern limit, already 4 degrees N, also shows stress with north-south tendency. Some located superficial earthquakes in the Pacific Coast, apparently western limit of Choco Block, show stress with NW tendency. Additionally, the vectors of displacement and the main stress axis in the Colombian southwest, near to the zone of Tumaco, show clear tendencies west-east. Finally, the deep seismicity in the zone of Bucaramanga displays stress with tendency NNW-SSE, coherent with the Caribbean Plate subduction under South America.

AB - ABSTRACT: A seismic tomographic study was performed for Nevado del Ruiz Volcano (NRV) using more than 1500 high-quality local and regional. Three low P wave velocity (low-V (sub P) ) and low S wave velocity (low-V (sub S) ) zones were found; one low-V (sub S) zone at depths 2-4 km located beneath the volcano; a second low-V (sub P) and low-V (sub S) zone at depths 5-10 km located beneath the crater, elongated and dipping to the E-SE; and a third low-V (sub P) and low-V (sub S) zone at 10 to approximately 12 km farther to the east. These three low-V (sub P) and low-V (sub S) zones are believed to be the location of heat sources. A high-velocity zone for both P and S waves was found at shallow depths (0 approximately 5 km) around the active crater. The upper part (0 approximately 2 km depth) of the high-V (sub P) and high-V (sub S) zone was characterized by low-V (sub P) /V (sub S) ratios (<1.68), while the deeper part (2 approximately 10 km) had high-V (sub P) /V (sub S) ratios (>1.80). The low-V (sub P) /V (sub S) zone is correlated with a steam-dominated geothermal system. The high-V (sub P) /V (sub S) is interpreted as an intrusive body of magmatic origin which includes partial melting zones associated with low-V (sub S) anomalies. A small low-V (sub P) zone in which long-period (LP) earthquakes were clustered was found to the southwest of the volcano. Based on the data obtained with the tomography in combination with seismicity, geochemistry, geology and gravimetry, we suggest a model for the seismic activity of NRV. Volcano-tectonic (VT) earthquakes that occur very often in swarm-like patterns located in several clusters around the volcano seem to be due to changes in stress produced by the passing of fluids and/or gas through many small cracks. A fault and a caldera-like structure separate the VT swarms located to the west of the volcano from the source of LP earthquakes.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Middle Magdalena Valley (MMV) in Colombia hosts huge hydrocarbon reserves. The reservoirs tapped to date are mainly from Tertiary successions. The Cretaceous intervals, containing the La Luna source rock, are not known to have classic sandy reservoirs, but have fractured calcareous units. Only two fields in the MMV have successfully penetrated fractured intervals and yielded initial productions of several thousands of BOPD. One of these, the Guaduas field, lies in a structurally elevated syncline, and the producing wells are on the eastern limb near the synclinal axis. SIPETROL and REPSOL-YPF are exploring and drilling the western side of the structure. The target formation is a westerly sourced Maastrichtian succession. The reservoir intervals are a combination of limestones, sandstones and conglomerates with shaly intervals. A new sedimentary model, using well and field data, was successfully tested. This model considers the interaction of starved periods of carbonate precipitation and limestone formation, and fluxes of high siliciclastic input coming from the unroofing of the Central Andean Cordillera. Detailed fault kinematics and fracture analysis, paired with oriented microstructural studies and FMI correlations, allowed to also predict the orientation and timing of the main conductive fractured sets. Drilling is complicated by an over-pressured seal and an under-pressured reservoir. One well to date, tested the main geological concepts, and a new well, to be completed in early 2001, might define the continuity of the Guaduas accumulation and open-up large reserve potential for the fractured Cretaceous play in the MMV.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Llanos Basin has the largest oil reserves in Colombia (3,415 MBOE), holding three of the four biggest fields of the country: Cano Limon (1034 MBOE), Cusiana (900 MBOE) and Cupiagua (700 MBOE). These accumulations are related to two major structural plays: fold belt in Eastern Cordillera foothills and subtle anticlines in the foreland. The geochemical characterization of 68 oil samples allows the definition of four different families associated to marine carbonate, marine siliciclastic and deltaic source rocks. There are clear evidences of mixing of oils from different source rocks, especially in the central-southern portion of the basin. Current physical properties of the oils were controlled by the origin (source rock characteristics), biodegradation vs. migration histories, and degree of oil mixing. During the last decade, the application of the petroleum system and complementary play concepts (Magoon, 1995) has provided a new rationale to approach petroleum research and to evaluate exploration risk. The mapping of geographical distribution of the oils related to each family allowed the identification of complementary plays in three distinct areas: (1) Llanos foothils, between the Cupiagua-Cusiana and the Arauca fields; (2) Central-northern Llanos Basin, between the Cano Limon field and the Cororora-1 well; and (3) the Eastern border of the Llanos foreland. Such approach provides basis for a better assessment of the remaining potential and exploration risk of finding hydrocarbons associated with each petroleum system of the Llanos Basin.
