AB - ABSTRACT: The corundum mines of Colombia are located in the southern part of the Cordillera Central, specifically in the Mercaderes-Rio Mayo region. These corundum occurrences are found in the alluvial deposits of the Rubi, Guabo, Paloverde, Limoncito, Chenequeta, Cocal, Monteoscuro, Monserrate and Honda streams, where the material from the Granatifera Tuff is eroded. The corundums show surface features indicating transport, corrosion and mechanical abrasion. These materials are not likely to be cogenetic with the lamprophyric host, but are possibly crustal fragments accidentally incorporated into the eruption magma. The presence of rutile and almandine-pyrope as crystalline inclusions within the corundums, and the existence of augite, kyanite and hercynite suggest a metamorphic origin possibly associated with the granulite xenoliths found in the Granatifera Tuff.

AB - ABSTRACT: Close to the Pacho town it is exposed a basic intrusive body of conic morphology, named as Gabbro Tragarepas intruding sedimentary rocks of Albian age. Petrographically intrusive rocks are composed of plagioclase labradorite, augite and hornblende, classified as pyroxenic, hornblendic gabbros; presents both granular and inter-granular and ofitic-subofitic textures. Also it is common to find hornblende, chlorite, calcite, epidote and pyrite as secondary minerals, formed by hydrothermal alteration, event recognized on all intrusive body. Geochemistry characterization shows that the gabbroic body belongs to sub-alkaline series with sodic tendency and tholeiitic character, which permits to classify the intrusive body as gabbro, gabbrodiorite and diorite with low alkalis. Tectonic discrimination diagrams were useful to establish the generation of the intrusive body by an intraplate distensive domain, as a consequence of the high basin's subsidence along the actual area of the Colombia Eastern Mountain Range during great part of the Mesozoic. The thickness of the continental crust originated deeper faults through which the magma rises from the mantle partial fusion. The petrographic and geochemistry results obtained from this work, show a great similarity with the other gabbroic bodies on the Eastern Mountain Range. Perhaps, they were emplaced along the same magmatic event.

AB - ABSTRACT: It is studied the stratigraphy of the successions containing the lowest Cretaceous marine rocks along the Urapa (Olaya Herrera) and Los Huevos (Ataco) creeks into the Caballos Formation. Overlying the Saldana Formation lies a succession variable in thickness that starts with continental deposits, followed by transitional and open sea, and finishing with transitional deposits. Into the marine rocks were identified Cheloniceras (Epicheloniceras) cf. pardoi Etayo-Serna, Ch. (E.) cf. bambucaense Etayo-Serna, Roloboceras cf. saxbyi Casey, bivalvs and gastropods. In the whole, this assemblage represents middle to late Aptian.

AB - ABSTRACT: Are identified Megatherium americanum and Eremotherium laurillardi for the Passo do Megaterio locality, in the Arroio Pessegueiro, Cacapava do Sul. The deposit is characterized by conglomerate sandstones, sandy siltstones and pelites, and the mammals are from the base of finning upward in the lower part of the profile. For the identification of Megatherium is suggested the exclusion of ambiguous characters such as "relatively deep mandibular body", and "femur transversely expanded proximally and distally", and that these genera could be distinguished, between other elements, on the basis of unique character combinations from femur and mandible. Derived characters in Megatherium are (1) symphysis extending to distal margin of m2; (2) depth of dentary, from alveolar margin of m3 to lowest point of ventral margin, higher than 195 mm;(3) medial femoral border prominently convex and, (4) patellar trochlea not medially extended. Derived characters in Eremotherium are: (1) symphysis extending to m1 or between m1 and m2; (2) depth of dentary, from alveolar margin of m3 to lowest point of ventral margin, lesser than 195 mm; (3) medial femoral border nearly rectilinear and, (4) patellar trochlea medially extended approximately until the level of the medial margin of the internal tibial condyle. It is possible that some species from South America such as Megatherium medinae and Megatherium lundi (or M. seijoi) could belong to Eremotherium rather than Megatherium. The presence of Megatherium americanum suggests a medial Pleistocene (Bonaerian) age for the Rio Grande do Sul site. Thus, caution must be held in the use of Eremotherium laurillardi as representing latest Pleistocene times, mainly support to biogeographic inferences.

AB - ABSTRACT: This paper will discuss the stratigraphic sections, petrographic and sedimentary environment of Tablazo and Simiti formation in sections of Barichara-San Gil (Santander) and Sachica (Boyaca), with a review of the stratigraphic nomenclature. The Tablazo Formation is mainly comprised of shallow deposits marked with bioclastic fragments. Proximal offshore deposits characterize Simiti Formation with sporadic formation influenced by the shallow coastal environment.
