AB - ABSTRACT: There is evidence of two phases of Pleistocene glaciation in the Andes of the humid tropical zone of Colombia. The direction of prevailing winds and distribution of precipitation were like those of the present. The snow line was lower by 700-1,000 meters and the solifluction zone by 1,350 meters. The mean annual temperature was lower, precipitation was greater, and evaporation and radiation were considerably reduced. These climatic factors account for the glacial phases and played as important a role as glacial meltwater in the origin of the many lakes which occupied high tectonic basins during the Pleistocene.

AB - ABSTRACT: Fourteen petroleum provinces are distinguished in South America. The Pacific coast provinces include accumulations in upper Devonian and Gondwana rocks of the sub-Andean zone of Bolivia-northern Argentina, oil fields in the Cretaceous-Tertiary epicontinental basin of the Peru-Ecuador Amazon region, and the Eocene oil fields of the Tertiary shelf region extending from northern Peru to northern Colombia. Data on the stratigraphy and structure of these Pacific provinces are summarized.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Sinu basin comprises a great thickness (about 20,000 feet) of Cretaceous to Pliocene marine sediments that have been folded into anticlines and frequently are faulted and sometimes overthrust. Numerous oil and gas seeps and mud volcanos suggest substantial accumulations of petroleum, but the possibilities are as yet unexplored.

AB - ABSTRACT: "The Oligocene of the Carmen-Zambrano area is divided into five foraminiferal zones and two subzones, the lower Miocene into two zones; the middle Miocene contains one zonule. A gradual filling-in of the basin is suggested, which was interrupted in the Carmen area by deepening of the sea during the upper lower Oligocene and the middle Oligocene, and at the end of the upper Oligocene. The zones are correlated with faunal units from other parts of the Caribbean area. Ten new species and one new variety are described.".

The soils associated with Plio-Pleistocene deposits and pre-Carboniferous granites are generally poor, whereas those developed on Oligo-Miocene formations of the piedmont region, Cretaceous formations of the mountainous zone, and Paleozoic formations of the cordilleran foreland vary from poor to good in quality, depending on the composition of the parent rock.

AB - ABSTRACT: So-called tektites from Colombia and Peru, for which the name americanite has been used, are mainly obsidian glass. The name macusanite is proposed for this type of pseudotektite, whose chemical composition indicates an intermediate position between sedimentary and igneous rocks. The macusanite specimens contain crystals of sillimanite, zircon, andalusite, mica, and staurolite or cordierite in a glass matrix. They may represent molten sediment solidified as glass or obsidian containing some molten sedimentary material.
