AB - ABSTRACT: We present a new approach for the evaluation of the potential of emerald reserves in gem projects using beryllium (Be) mobility. The distribution of Be in the different phases of hydrothermally altered (albitized) black shale hosting Colombian emerald deposits indicates that Be-mobility is associated with the breakdown of Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide phases. The amount of Be that can be mobilized ( approximately 0.7X10 (super -6) g/g; i.e., 0.7 ppm) may represent up to 18 wt% of the total Be contained in the black shale. A mass balance calculation applied to a well-constrained alteration zone of the Chivor mines, and based on the quantification of Be that can be mobilized under hydrothermal conditions, gives an estimate of the total gem reserves of these mines.

AB - ABSTRACT: We present a detailed investigation on the reliability of some of the dynamic pseudofunctions used to upscale flow properties in reservoir simulation. A one-dimensional example (1D) and a real field application are used to evaluate methods developed by Kyte and Berry and Stone, and a new flux weighted potential (FWP) method. A derivation of Stone's method (based on the description given by Stone above) is presented, which is found to give an inconsistent set of equations. Stone's analytical example was used to illustrate how pseudorelative permeabilities that exhibit nonphysical behavior may still give acceptable results, but this success can disappear with changes in boundary conditions. The pseudofunctions from a field application were not able to match the 2D simulations from which they were calculated, even when a different pseudofunction was used for each coarse grid block. Improvements were obtained when directional pseudofunctions were used, but still the results were not satisfactory. Similar results were found when comparing fine and coarse grid 3D simulations for a quarter of a five-spot pattern in this field. The results presented in this article suggest that dynamic pseudofunctions, as applied here and as commonly used in industry, may not be an adequate approach to up-scaling. The possibility of large errors and the difficulty in predicting when they may occur make the use of pseudofunctions examined in this paper unreliable.

AB - ABSTRACT: Outcrop samples from the Flora and Eslabon formations from northwestern Bolivia contain abundant terrestrial palynomorphs. Pollen grains and spores of 49 species belonging to 36 genera were identified and two new pollen species--Psilaperiporites boliviensis and Psilaperiporites suarezi--are described. The Bolivian palynoflora consists mainly of monocolpate, tricolpate and tricolporate angiosperm pollen grains. The gymnosperm pollen content is low and bisaccates are totally lacking. Some samples also include fungal spores and the fresh-water algae Botryococcus. The assemblage from the Eslabon Formation is compared with that of the Proteacidites dehaani Zone, known from Colombia and Venezuela, and with that of the Tricornites elongatus Zone in Brazil, indicating late Maastrichtian age. The palynoflora of the Flora Formation is probably of Paleocene age. The results indicate deposition in a continental warm and humid environment, as suggested by the composition of the palynoflora which show an abundance of palm pollen grains and the presence of Botryococcus and Azolla megaspores.

AB - ABSTRACT: The geologic record of the approximately 1-Ga basement of Middle America (Mexico and Central America) is compared with those from the Grenvillian orogen of southern and eastern North America, the Sveconorwegian orogen in southern Norway and Sweden, the basement massifs of the northern Andes of Colombia and Peru, and the western Amazon craton. These comparisons suggest that closest correlatives of Oaxacan Complex in Mexico crop out in the Adirondack Highlands and the Colombian massifs because they all contain metasediments and a approximately 1.18-1.06-Ga anorthosite - mangerite - charnockite - granite (AMCG) suite. Peak P-T conditions for the various approximately 1-Ga regions indicate that the Oaxacan Complex is most comparable to the Adirondacks, the Colombian massifs, and the Norwegian internal belt, but the latter is dissimilar in being remobilized approximately 1.75-1.55-Ga Gothian basement. Similarly, comparison of the temperature-time paths for the various areas of the orogen indicates closest correlatives of Oaxaquia are the Adirondack Highlands, the internal parts of the Grenville orogen in Labrador and the Garzon Massif in Colombia. Comparing the age and lithologies of the oldest strata overlying the approximately 1-Ga basement, the Late Cambrian-Early Ordovician cover of the Oaxacan Complex is most similar to that in the Colombian massifs, and both have a Gondwanan faunal assemblage. The close correlation between the Adirondack Highlands, Oaxaquia, and the Colombian massifs suggests that they mostly originated as arcs in the Grenville ocean between Laurentia, Baltica, and Amazonia. The arcs were caught between colliding cratons and depressed into the roots of the Grenville orogen. The subsequent break-up of Rodinia left the Adirondack Highlands with Laurentia, and Oaxaquia and the Colombian massifs with Gondwana as indicated by Cambro-Ordovician faunal affinities and the similarity of their Paleozoic cover to that on the Amazon craton. The generally younger unconformity on the Gondwana side of Iapetus may be interpreted in terms of asymmetrical listric rifting with Gondwana on the upper plate.
