AB - ABSTRACT: The Los Mangos Granulites is the metamorphic basement of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta massif. Gneisses, granulites, and amphibolites are the predominant rocks. The orthopyroxene garnet-mesopertite, orthoclase-garnet-biotite, and clinopyroxene-quartz are the mineral associations of the granulite facies present in this sequence. Sm-Nd isotopic study yield a garnet-whole rock age of 971+ or -8 MA, interpreted as the high-grade metamorphic age, and associated with the orogenic Grenville event. The T (sub DM) model ages between 1.47 and 1.92 Ga, and epsilon (sub Nd) (T = 971 Ma), values between +0.37 to -5.02, suggests the presence of crustal material, and ca. 1.9 Ga age for the protoliths of the Los Mangos Granulites.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Eastern Cordillera of Colombia is a large fold belt bounded to the east by the Llanos foreland basin and to the west by the Magdalena basin. It is characterized by both east and west-verging, high-angle and low angle reverse faults. The Eastern Cordillera has been interpreted in different ways that include: 1) A thin-skinned thrust belt, 2) inversion of pre-existing early Mesozoic rift basins and 3) a combination of previous. Three major provinces compose the northern part of the Eastern Cordillera. The eastern province is defined by the east-vergent Samore Thrust Front, an inverted Jurassic-early Cretaceous basin defines the central province, and the western province contains the northwest-vergent Middle Magdalena thrust system. A regional analysis of geologic maps allowed the northern portion of the Eastern Cordillera to be divided into seven major structural domains. These domains are the result of Tertiary inversion of Jurassic rift basins and half grabens. Two new small Jurassic-early Cretaceous grabens are proposed: the Servita and Tama half grabens. At least 90 Km of shortening, caused by at least three different tectonic events with different orientations, has been accommodated across the northern portion of the Eastern Cordillera since the Oligocene. The Samore Thrust Front is located in the northeastern portion of the Eastern Cordillera fold belt, Colombia. This fold belt covers an area of at least 900 km (super 2) . It includes five major thrust faults and their associated folds, which from hinterland to foreland include the Rio Cubugon, La China, Aguablanca, El Silencio, and Los Deseos structures. A closely-spaced grid of industry seismic reflection data, augmented by remote sensing images and field geologic data provides an outstanding opportunity to analyze the three-dimensional geometry and kinematics of these structures. Results of this analysis lend new insight into the extent, style, and sequence of thrusts, and timing of deformation within the Samore Thrust Front. The three-dimensional geometry of the structures in the Samore Thrust Front is complicated, as several tectonic events have occurred during their evolution. Changes in displacement along the general NW-SE strike of the structures is due to both SE and ENE directed transport on pre-existing NE-SW oriented normal faults. There is a direct correlation between fold and fault geometries. Folds are mostly oriented NNW in the deeper structures, whereas folds are oriented both NNW and NNE for the shallowest "Los Deseos" structure. The same relationship is observed in the thrust faults. This is interpreted to be the result of two different tectonic events in the region. At least three major deformation events are invoked for the structures along the Samore Thrust Front. A first event is interpreted to have occurred during the early Oligocene, forming a southeast-vergent imbricate fan. This imbricate fan was eroded and covered by middle-late Oligocene deposits forming a major angular unconformity. A subsequent contractile event in Miocene-Pliocene time reactivated pre-existing thrust faults and created new ones that folded those formed during the earlier event. Thrust faults produced in this later shortening event offset the angular unconformity. A more recent tectonic event has folded all the structures from the two previous events. The thin-skinned thrust faults of the Samore Thrust Front can be linked to an inversion of Jurassic-early Cretaceous age extensional faults since the Oligocene, which are still active.

AB - ABSTRACT: When we study flow in an unsaturated porous medium from a concentrated recharge, we identify two phenomena: first, the residual retention of the soil is negligible, the fluid mass available to flow is constant in the time, therefore the dimensional analysis considering self-similar solutions of the first kind is enough in order to solve the traditional diffusion equation. Second, if the residual retention is kept in mind, the fluid mass available to flow is variable with time, because the capillary forces retain part of the fluid, and the above self-similarity supposition is not valid. Another type of autosimilar supposition is required, which considers anomalous exponents. Under these conditions, the equation to solve is non-linear, with a discontinuous coefficient, and it is referred to as Barenblatt's Equation. In this case, the dimensional analysis is not enough in order to obtain the solution, and we use another technique, such as the solution of an eigenvalue problem. In this work, the eigenvalue problem is solved numerically, with a combined Runge-Kutta and modified Euler algorithm. The resulting solution allows us to observe the evolution of a fluid volume in time; in this case, water and oil are considered. We may estimate the distance of propagation of both fronts whether we consider or not the residual retention of soil.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Middle Magdalena Basin has been explored since the beginning of this century. The most important reservoirs are Eocene through Oligocene in age. The hydrocarbon potential of the Cretaceous rocks has also been identified by some wells in Upper and Lower Cretaceous rocks. Almost seventy important hydrocarbon fields have been discovered in the basin. These fields are related to structural traps generated during at least two compressional deformation events. The seismic data show that Tertiary deformation over regional Eocene unconformity generally corresponds with Cretaceous deformation under the unconformity. This study identifies the structural framework and the total curvature of Cretaceous calcareous rocks using three-dimensional structural models of forty oil fields. This work integrates detailed outcrop data, radar images, aerial photographs, 2.000 kilometers of seismic profiles and information of 150 wells. The compressional deformation has been controlled by the presence of Jurassic and early Cretaceous normal faults. The reverse faults and their hanging-wall structures are the result of two compressional events. Three fracture sets were identified at surface in the Cretaceous rocks, a longitudinal a traversal and a conjugate set. These sets are interpreted as formed by compression during the uplift of the Eastern Cordillera. Integration of surface data and values of total curvature from three-dimensional models of Rosablanca Formation provides a predictive model for fracture distribution in the anticlines and present how this analysis could aid in the exploration of analogous calcareous reservoirs reducing the exploratory risk of the hydrocarbon prospects.
