AB - ABSTRACT: The Putumayo Basin is located in southern Colombia, representing the northern extension of the Oriente Basin (Ecuador). Part of the prolific Subandean province, the Putumayo Basin holds about 1,942 MBOE in place. This paper reports how the integration of 1-D modeling results and geochemical data from the fold belt allowed a better understanding of petroleum generation and migration history in the Putumayo Basin. Molecular data of oil samples from the foothills area revealed a complex reservoir filling history, with at least two distinct migration pulses separated by a biodegradation event. A review of compositional and isotopic data of gas samples also points out to the mixing of hydrocarbon gases related to distinct migration pulses. Vitrinite reflectance data together with the results of the modeling performed with the GENEX complex tectonic module (GenTect) shows that the source rock is practically immature in the Putumayo foothills, even in the footwall of large thrust faults. The thermal and burial reconstruction of a pseudo well located in the present cordillera area suggests that the source rocks have started petroleum generation and expulsion during the Late Eocene/Oligocene. The oil and gas expelled during such period have migrated over 80 km, reaching the present foreland area. The subsequent tectonic burial related to the Miocene/Pliocene Andean paroxysm probably accounts for the generation and/or remigration of thermally evolved hydrocarbons limited to the foothills.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Bogota Basin is located at the axis of the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia, and covers an area of 3,200 km2. Coal beds within the basin are confined mainly to a series of parallel, northeast-trending synclines, which extend over 90 km. The Guaduas Formation (Maestrichtian age) is the only coal-bearing unit in the basin, ranging in thickness from 800 to 1800 m, with a net coal thickness of 4-12 m. Nine Guaduas coalfields were evaluated for coalbed methane (CBM) potential: Subachoque, Rio Frio, Checua, Cogua, Tomine, Santa Rosa, Suesca, Tunja, and Sogamoso. The Checua, Sogamoso, and Tunja coalfields are the best Guaduas CBM prospects. Guaduas Formation coals are of high to low, volatile bituminous rank; vitrinite reflectance values range from 0.5 to 1.6%, at depths ranging from the surface to 300 m. Mines in the Checua coal field are known to have high gas content, and gas seeps are widespread over this syncline. Gas content of the subsurface coals (determined by desorption) ranges form 30 to 500 scft/Ton coal; the lower values have resulted from early degasification of the mines. Petrographic and desorption studies indicate that as gas content increases, inertinite and vitrinite reflectance increase. Guaduas Formation fractures have a regional azimuth of 129 degrees, with a suborthogonal fracture pattern. Fracture intensity and, hence, permeability, are high for these CBM prospects. The estimated CBM resource in Guaduas coals in the Bogota Basin is 10 Tcf; this resource has excellent market potential due to its proximity to the city of Bogota.

AB - ABSTRACT: Os isotope ratios and Os and Re concentrations were measured in 56 lavas coming from 10 different subduction zones. Samples span a large range of major element concentrations (from basalts to dacites) and Mgfrom 0.32 to 0.81). The 10 subduction zones, namely the Lesser Antilles, Java, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Izu-Bonin, Kamchatka, the Aleutians, Mexico, Colombia and Peru-Chile, have a range of geodynamic settings. Measured (super 187) Os/ (super 188) Os ratios range from 0.130 to 1.524 and Os concentrations range from 0.05 to 46 ppt. Re concentrations range from 24 to 915 ppt. Os initial isotope ratios are systematically positively and linearly correlated with the inverse of Os concentrations in arc lavas from a given volcano, indicating that the Os isotopic compositions always reflect a binary mixing process. Similar mixing relationships are also seen at the sample scale. All trends converge towards unradiogenic compositions similar to those of upper mantle peridotites. These mixing relationships might be ascribed to a general contamination process; however, a single shallow-level process of crustal assimilation is hardly reconciled with the diversity of basements (from oceanic crust to continental crust compositions) of the selected arc volcanoes, the occurrence of the mixing lines for both primary and differentiated samples, and the absence of covariations between Os contents, isotope ratios, and indices of contamination and differentiation. On the other hand, because subducted components are very radiogenic and differ from one zone to another, the radiogenic components may be explained by varying amounts and natures of oceanic crust and sediments in the source of arc lavas. However, this explanation implies two disequilibrium processes, first during magma formation in order to produce heterogeneous lavas, and second during magma ascent to the surface to preserve slab signatures.
